Grey Cup 2009

gounhwildcats

Go Cats!! Beat Maine!!!
Figured I'd get this going now and get the buzz going ;) . This years game features the Montreal Alouettes, who had the best record in the league this year at 15-3 and were clearly the best and most dominant team in the regular season. Representing the west is the Saskatchewan Roughriders who beat Calgary last week in the West final. Saskatchewan were inconsistent all year, but got hot in the last few weeks of the year. They had the best record in the west division, but only clinched first on the last day of the year. Montreal won both games in the regular season between these two, and I figure should win the Grey Cup fairly easily. My prediction is 35-17 Alouettes.

The game is in Calgary -- the forecast calls for sun and 35 degrees, so the weather won't really be a factor.

I'd love to see the Riders knock off the Als, but it won't be easy. Calvillo will be the difference for Montreal.

Wonder if Nadia Stoochnoff will be at the game, 34 years after her last "appearance" at McMahon Stadium.

The game itself wasn't bad.

But the topless woman who dashed onto the field just before the national anthem, braving -40C wind chills (that's -40F) to display her assets?

It's a Grey Cup memory that remains near the pinnacle of George Hitzroth's personal highlight reel.

"It was freezing that day, and everybody had goosebumps -- we'd stayed warm thinking of Nadia Stoochnoff, who came out in her birthday suit, and what looked like a little bit of cheesecloth," said Hitzroth.

"She stood at attention while the anthem was played, and we all admired her stoicism and courage in that temperature. Also, she had the most spectacular goosebumps we'd ever seen."

Whether Stoochnoff the Streaker ever attended another cup game after her impromptu show at McMahon Stadium in 1975 is unknown -- but Hitzroth hasn't missed a CFL final since, and that game was his 30th Grey Cup.

Re: Grey Cup 2009

Al's (ex Baltimore Stallions, ex Baltimore (CFL) Colts) 28-27 on a FG with no time left.

Re: Grey Cup 2009

That was one of the best, and yet weirdest Grey Cups I've ever seen. I'm too young to have seen the wind, fog and mud bowls but this goes down with those. Saskatchewan led 17-3 at halftime and seemed like they were in absolute control. Montreal scored to make it 17-10 on their opening possession of the second half, but could do nothing for the remainder of the third quarter. Saskatchewan scored ten more to make it 27-11 (Montreal got a single on a punt into the endzone), and it looked like lights out for Montreal. The Als put together a nice drive and with 7 minutes left they made it 27-19 with the 2 pt convert. That set the stage for possibly the biggest play of the game. Ex North Carolina QB Darian Durant scrambled to his right and put one up to his slot back. The receiver cut the route short, the pass went long and Montreal picked it off. Montreal would score a TD with 1:45 left, but would miss the 2 pt convert. The Als held the Roughriders to a 2 and out and got the ball back with 40 seconds left on their own 45. A few plays later and they were in FG range on the Rider 35 with 5 seconds left. From 42 yards out Damon Duval pushed the ball wide right, but there were flags on the play. Turned out the Riders had 13 men on the field (illegal even by Canadian rules), so Montreal got another shot. Duval wouldn't make the same mistake and Montreal wins it 28-27 on the last play of the game.

The MVP was ex-West Virginia RB Avon Cobourne
The Most Valuable Canadian was ex BYU WR Ben Cahoon (who also became the leading receiver in Grey Cup history today)

Really great game today.

Really great game today.

Sorry I missed it, but it sounds like a typically wild Grey Cup game. They're usually much more exciting than the Super Bores.

I was hoping the Riders would pull it off, but the Als definitely were the favorites.
