General D-I NCAA Tournament Musings

ARM

Fan of chipmunk-like mascots.
Just creating a general thread for discussion about the National Collegiate NCAA Women's Tournament that don't fit anywhere else, like game/team specific topics do.

For example, these are the records I came up with for the 11 teams in the field versus the rest of the field this season:

The Ohio State University (9-5-2)
Minnesota (9-4-3)
Colgate (8-3-1)
Yale (7-3)
Northeastern (2-0)
Wisconsin (6-9-2)
Minnesota-Duluth (7-9)
Quinnipiac (4-5)
Clarkson (2-6)
Penn State (3-7)
Long Island (0-6)

Other than flipping Colgate and Yale, the seedings this year would be the same using just KRACH. It's just a coincidence, but interesting.

Clarkson vs Minn Duluth Common Opponents
Clarkson vs SLU 4-0-1 : 3-1, 5-4OT, 1-0, 2-2, 3-1
UMD vs SLU 1-0-0: 3-2
Clarkson vs Harvard: 2-0-0 : 5-1 and 4-2
UMD vs Harvard: 2-0-0 : 4-0, 9-0

Keys to Clarkson winning:
First line of Cherkowski, David and K McQuigge has to score
Take advantage of any PP's and stay out of the box
Defense has to play better than they did against Colgate in the ECAC Championship 8-2 debacle. Regular season the scores were 2-1 and 2-0 Gate.
Pasiechnyk in goal has to make some big stops.
I am sure Matt Desrosiers and his staff will have the team ready.

LETS GO TECH

Clarkson vs Minn Duluth...
I would think that UMD is most similar to Yale of the ECAC teams, although Yale this season was likely a better version of that recipe. Normally, I'd say that defensively the Bulldogs (another similarity!) don't give you much, but that wasn't as true versus tOSU on Friday. A very good goalie. Bell is likely as good offensively from the blue line as anyone not named Jaques. The difference from last year when they had Giguere, Hughes, and Klein up front with 50+ points apiece is that after Hughes and Bell, they now have players in that 20-30 pt range, as compared to the kind of threats that you are really scared against. Goals figure to be hard to come by in this game.

On the Clarkson side, we have Cherkowski and David with 52 points each with Lappan at 40 pts. These three are the only players with 10 or more goals. Lappan played with Cherkowski and David early in the year but was moved to another line with B McQuigge (14 Pts in 28 games) taking her place. Lappans production has fallen from 11G 18A in the first 20 games to 2G 9A in the last 21 games. After the top 3 forwards, the next 3 highest point producers are all from the blueline. Markowski 32, Gosling 26 and Wynn 23 points. All the other players have 20 points or less. So yes goals may be at a premium and I may be generous in expecting Clarkson to score 3 but I never thought they would score 4 on Yale so who knows. Soderberg is an excellent goalie but so is Pasiechnyk for Clarkson. May the best team win. LETS GO TECH

hee, hee…that’s a good one!

Now if LIU can take care of Wisconsin, that’ll make Northeastern look pretty good!

With Wisconsin's skilled forwards and mobile defensemen they might put up 25-30 shots a period...Who knows how many goals that will translate to?

According to an email I received from Clarkson, the Thursday game is at 6PM CST (7PM Eastern). Nothing on streaming but I am expecting I will have to cough up some green backs to the BIG to see the game.

The games hosted by B1G schools last year - including the Thursday games - were shown on BTN-Plus, and are still in the video 'archive' at the BTN web site. And they are still marked as "Free". There's nothing showing in the 'upcoming' schedule at BTN yet, but that doesn't mean much. If things are the same this year, expect the games to again be free.

If this was still the start of January, my answer would be, "Goals? What are these goals of which you speak?" Unfortunately, when the weasels visited Ridder last month, we gave them plenty of practice at putting pucks into a net, so I think they're all better now. I could still see them spending the first 30 minutes or so whistling shots off the glass or into the goalie's midsection; eventually, the new kids will get worn down by the constant UW chaos, inefficient though it sometimes may be.

Admittedly, I've been in a rut with Sconniville nicknames but this brought a smile to my face...Thank you. And yes, the Tunnelers did assist the "weasels" in getting out of their goal scoring funk.

Thursday games at Minn and Ohio State finally show up in the BTN-Plus 'upcoming' schedule, and they carry a designation of being "free".

(The Saturday games, however, are still not there. LOL!)

Saturday games now also on the BTN-Plus schedule, also marked "free".

We have a couple first-time entrants into the tournament, something that a tournament expansion and addition of another automatic bid should help. Congratulations to Penn State and Long Island!

Going by memory and using current conference affiliations, that would give us an all-time list of NCAA Tournament qualifiers of:

NEWHA: (1)
LIU

CHA: (6)
Mercyhurst
Niagara (defunct)
Penn State
RIT
Robert Morris (temporarily defunct)
Syracuse

ECAC: (10)
Brown
Clarkson
Colgate
Cornell
Dartmouth
Harvard
Princeton
Quinnipiac
St. Lawrence
Yale

HEA: (5)
BC
BU
UNH
Northeastern
Providence

WCHA: (5)
Minnesota
UMD
UND (defunct)
tOSU
Wisconsin

I get 27 programs that made the NCAAs. Am I forgetting anyone?

As for the next likely addition, another NEWHA team would seem to be on the horizon. Vermont isn't far away, but can the Catamounts take another step? St. Thomas is on an upward trajectory, but they have obstacles in their path. Predictions? Probably a better off-season topic.
