Re: Games tonight: 2/4 Scores???
Fitchburg State defeated UMass-Dartmouth 3-1.
The two teams played a wide open game, with few stoppages or penalties, and plenty of scoring chances. In the end, it came down to the goaltending with Bobby Leiser stepping up for the Falcons with 30 saves. Jon Dryjowicz-Burek played a stellar game, with about 33 saves and some great saves. However, it was the Falcons who prevailed.
The first period featured about 25 shots, but few quality scoring chances for each team. The only goal of the period was a power-play marker from Erik Trahan from the point, which traveled through a maze of players to the back of the net.
The second period featured the only Falcons penalty of the game (which was unceremoniously killed off). Both teams had several scoring chances before Andrew Hutton nailed home a bouncing puck with under ninety seconds to go to make it 2-0. Not to be outdone, the Corsairs responded with a 2 on 1 with thirty seconds to go, with Jason Stahl reaping the benefits.
The third was as exciting as the second, with both goalies stepping up with tremendous saves to keep the game close. Justin Quinn eventually put in a rebound in the crease to make it 3-1. The Corsairs tried to respond, but strong defense by the Falcons and some great saves by Leiser kept it a two goal game. The Corsairs had a opportunity to pull the goalie with an offensive zone faceoff with 50 seconds left, but they chose not to. UMD never got another chance after that.
Fitchburg State improves to 14/15-3-1 on the season, extends their winning streak to nine games, and will play Framingham State next Thursday. UMass-Dartmouth falls to 7-11-1, and will play Salem State next on Saturday.
Random Note: Normally, I would've posted period-by-period updates. However, I was actually at the game. Also, how many wins do the Falcons need to get any consideration in the polls?
