DIII Conferences Shuffle?

Hi, excuse my ignorance to this topic. I have followed DI-Hockey East my whole life so I am new to the DIII landscape - as of the introduction of Rivier hockey.

Can anyone tell me their thoughts on when/where Rivier can land conference wise? This land of independence is obviously less than ideal. I had heard that New England College might be leaving their current conference home...could they wind up with Rivier and the (two?) other independents to begin to form a new conference? Help educate me :)
 
It is my understanding that the 4 independents are looking to have 2 schools join them to form a conference. Albertus M., Anna Maria, Rivier and SUNY Canton are the 4 current independents and last year they held an end of the year tournament with the blessing of the GNAC.
 
The GNAC is, I believe, one school away from having its own conference. That will open a can of worms

Yeah, but Norwich will not leave the NEHC for hockey. No way they move away from that conference with hockey. At least no time in the near future.
 
If there's enough of a budget incentive they will. Less sport-specific conferences = less administrative costs

If the GNAC does sponsor hockey, Norwich doesn't have a choice. I have heard many rumblings about Norwich moving on from the GNAC and I think this is a big part of it. If Norwich Athletics joined the football team in the NEWMAC (for example) the hockey program could remain in the NEHC (sidenote: getting out of the GNAC would be huge IMO. As respectfully as possible, institutionally, NU shouldn't be in a league with many of the schools who are members of the GNAC - but I digress).

In order for Norwich to remain in the NEHC, they have to be full members of a league which does not sponsor hockey. IF the GNAC officially sponsors hockey, Norwich has to get out to remain in the NEHC. If NU is still a full member of the GNAC when they pull the trigger on hockey, Norwich has no choice which league they play hockey in.

TL;DR Norwich needs to get out of the GNAC, like, now.

Hence the large can of worms.

I remember when the MASCAC formed and Salem State had to leave the ECAC-East. Players were not happy and a couple transfered out.

As a former non-hockey Norwich athlete, I was often jealous of the resources the hockey team had. But, to be honest, we all knew where our bread was buttered. This would be horrible for NU.

Though, to return to the OP’s question, perhaps good for Rivier.
