Cornell Big Red Women's Hockey 2013-14

With the 2013-2014 season almost upon us, I thought it was time to start a new thread.

There are a couple big questions going into this season. 1) How will Cornell's defense shape up with the graduation of Fortino and Rougeau, and 2) who will step up offensively to help fill the major void left by Jenner's centralization with Team Canada? The good news for us Cornell fans is there is still a lot of talent for Derraugh and staff to work with.

Good to see Brianne Jenner made the game today to cheer on her teammates!

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's Hockey 2013-14

Great read on Cornell this week on USCHO's D1 Women's page. http://www.uscho.com/2013/10/30/campbell-and-fulton-are-becoming-more-recognizable-at-cornell/

The line of Campbell, Saulnier and Fulton has been a lot of fun to watch in the early going. Emily Fulton in particular has really stepped up her game big time. My understanding is she had some injury issues she was dealing with her first two season at Cornell, which may have been limiting her play a bit.

Cornell's offense has been much better than I expected. There is still some work to be done on maintaining the intensity level for a full 60 minutes and in the defensive zone.

The freshman class looks good and is contributing nicely. I'm looking forward to seeing what Veerman (injured) or Voorheis will add.

Should be another entertaining season.

When did the Dutch start playing hockey?

Don't forget, a third rookie with Dutch Lineage/Name: DeBruin

To answer your question, ever heard of Ijzerman or Staal or Nieuwendijk. Any NHL'er whose name starts with "Van" , "De", "Van de" or "VanDer".

Did you know that at one point New York was called New Amsterdam, and that Harlem was really Haarlem, named after a famous dutch town called Haarlem.

Congratulations to Coach Derraugh on being named head coach of the 2014-15 Canadian Women's National Team. http://www.cornellbigred.com/news/2014/7/8/WICE_0708141548.aspx

Also, (I'm a little late in posting this) a great big thank you for four amazing years to the recently graduated seniors (Campbell, Cudmore, Gagliardi and Slebodnick). I wish much success to each of them on their future endeavors.

New head coach and new assistant coaches. Understandable in the case of Dineen for not coming back. But what happened to the old assistant coaches (I read Goyette was going to be promoted to head coach, not that I think it's a good idea as I don't). Methinks Hockey Canada wanted to fire Goyette and her colleague altogether with Church at the same time but that would have simply killed the team.

Or is this what HC does every Olympic cycle?
