According to this list by The Center for College Affordability and Productivity, seven out of the 25 schools on this list have college hockey teams:

Some of these teams in the upper Midwest are not surprising at all:

That's cool, but where's RPU? I've never heard of it. :D

Re: College Hockey Schools Have Some of the Worst Professors in the Nation

Once again Yale is overlooked. When will they get RESPECT!!!!!?

Re: College Hockey Schools Have Some of the Worst Professors in the Nation

Central Michigan State? Well, I guess CMU can rest easy tonight knowing it's their apparently long lost evil twin that has the shitty profs and not them.
And I guess it really is true that Michigan Tech can't have nice things. ;)

Re: College Hockey Schools Have Some of the Worst Professors in the Nation

Saying this came from an "education think tank" is more than a little generous, considering the "data" they used. If they were trying to make a couple bucks with a hit generator, they should have gone full-out Bleacher Report and turned this into a 50-page slide show.

Re: College Hockey Schools Have Some of the Worst Professors in the Nation

This needs to be changed to read, "Worst Teaching Professors". There's a BIG difference between a poor teacher and a poor professor. Not all professors teach, particularly in the sciences, where so much of the learn happens outside the classroom.

When it comes to learning research methods in the laboratory, something that wouldn't be reflected in classes, I'll take someone who has published multiple times in Nature over someone who hasn't published work since his/her dissertation from grad school (no offense to teaching professors at liberal arts colleges who are good teachers).

Also, this is using RateMyProfessors.com? Geez....

Re: College Hockey Schools Have Some of the Worst Professors in the Nation

I would imagine that the technical schools might rank poorly due to technical professors who don't speak English well...

Re: College Hockey Schools Have Some of the Worst Professors in the Nation

I bet close to 100% of those schools have basketball teams :D

which frankly, I don't care about because you need to be able to communicate. On the other hand, I've seen people be needlessly hard on foreign TAs who are english proficient... I'm sure profs get the same traetment in that regard. Nevertheless, if you are an undergrad, unless you are the rare type that does undergrad research, the fact that the prof is awesome in the lab is rather irrelevant to the education process for you... it might mean something to the school or the grad students, but its irrelevant when you're recieving instruction.

edit: interesting to see Bryant on there... as far as I know that's a school that cares more about your bank account than your academic abilities.

Aha, beat me to it.

I would have thought Osorojo would have started this thread. Then when he said "Has anyone ever done a study on whether college hockey students have good professors?" Biddy could have been all over it!

Re: College Hockey Schools Have Some of the Worst Professors in the Nation

I made it my goal in life during college to disparage foreign TA's.

Re: College Hockey Schools Have Some of the Worst Professors in the Nation

I'm calling BS on this list.

It seems biased against real majors aka science/engineering.

If it judges the liberal arts better than the real degrees no point in even looking at it.

You are absolutely correct about this, and this is especially true at RPI. Many professors are hired for the purposes of doing research which will bring money to the institute, and then they have to teach on the side, although most of their primary "teaching" will be doing research with a graduate student. At least for our school, a position was created called "Clinical Associate Professor", where the hiree only teaches.

Puck Swami is also right in that many classes are in Engrish [sic]. One of the groups on campus was actually pushing towards getting competent TA's who actually know the subject and having English language requirements for the TA's as well.

RateMyProfessor.com is actually pretty accurate if you were to balance out the usage of 1's and 5's. Many of us used it to determine when to take a class.

Re: College Hockey Schools Have Some of the Worst Professors in the Nation

It does seem to favor the Engineering/Science/Technical Universities. I would guess that is because by nature the type of person that teaches these fields isn't as skilled at doing actual teaching. While some professors in these fields definitely are gifted at this, they would be much tougher to find than in say, Liberal Arts. Also, when you're hiring a professor in these fields, you don't necessarily look for someone who is a great teacher, research is what drives these types of hires.

With this said, someone needs to email this article to Passerello at Tech, I'd love to see his reaction to it. (bonus points to anyone that knows what the hell I'm talking about)

Thanks for the unsolicited plug! Any press is good press. Keep it up.
Avoid confusion. Stick to hockey and stay away from professors and scholarship.

I made it my goal in life during college to disparage foreign TA's.

I just ignored them, and drank. didn't see any reason to spill any beer over them.
