Colgate offseason speculations

Re: Colgate offseason speculations

I'm looking forward to the Spink twins playing at Starr, as well as the other frosh from Cornwall. Want to see how they mesh with this year's holdovers and what they can produce early in the season. First few weeks are key, as we found out this year with UNO, Miami and Ferris. A few wins or splits here and there might have produced different results. Also hope we can avoid the post holiday slump next time - that was a killer :(

Re: Colgate offseason speculations

Checked the Cornwall Colts site yest(bored). . Last playoff game they were the three stars of the game(one didn't make it). They won their first playoff series 4-1 and they all have between like 5 and 10 points. Spink boys have ridiculous point totals and Borokowski is on fire now also.

Two of them are first team all stars, one second team, and I believe the other third team. Baun is listed as a "power forward" at 6-1 204# and the Spink bros are listed at 178 and 185 lbs, up from 155 lbs last year.

Now I know this isn't Major Juniors but it's Tier 1 Jr A and supposedly a major feeder to college hockey and right there with the USHL . Are these guys that good or is it a weaker league, I really don't know.

Austin Smith scored a shootout goal last night in the Stars win. Congrats, first point in three games.

Johnston and Lough, two d-men from that same league and also '12 'Gate recruits, were the first team all-star defensemen in that league as well.

Re: Colgate offseason speculations

Congratulations to Austin. Well deserved. Took an exceptional effort and results on his part to get the national recognition.

Re: Colgate offseason speculations

Excuse my stupidity. I just realized that the old thread was closed, I was wondering why no one was talking anymore.

I could not be happier for Austin, his team mates, the coaches and the program. I think this may give Colgate some power in the recruiting battles, along with Union winning the National Championship hopefully. Lots of national attention with Maine and UMD. If I was recruiting, I'd be on the road all week beating my chest saying "you can come to Colgate as one of the top players in the country".

Re: Colgate offseason speculations

Smith got his first assist last night. Shootout goal previously.

Re: Colgate offseason speculations

I was just reading the tail end of the 2011-12 thread and saw the note about the two McNamara bros leaving AC early. It occurred to me that I never heard what happened to Kevin this year ...was he injured, did he fall out of favor or something else? Seems like a bonehead move to leave AC early when one of you is a Captain and the other should be looking for more playing time next year...

Kevin missed just about all of the second half due to an upper body injury.

Re: Colgate offseason speculations

Congrats to Austin again, this time on making the Hobey Hat Trick. Hope for a great announcement on Thursday night. Whatever happens, as Gaterrooter says, this is all good PR for our program.

Re: Colgate offseason speculations

Will add my congratulations to Austin Smith. Many naysayers on his behalf as an ECAC player, no tourny wins, etc...but numbers are numbers, so we'll see.

Don't share the same optimism that having a HHT finalist or Hobey winner will be the lightning rod Colgate needs. We've had talent before [MacDonald]. Our trip to the NCAAs in 2000 was followed by a less-than-stellar season from what I recall. I think this is true for most sports. Perhaps the most disappointing follow-up seasons were with football in 2003 or basketball with Foyle/Neale in '95(?). We can't seem to keep momentum on our side like some of our peer schools [Bucknell, Lehigh]. Will FF-bound Union now be an upper-echelon team in the ECAC year in and year out? It seems cyclical; good for a year or two and then back to the drawing board.

Anyone associated with Smith know him well enough to comment on his choice in coming to Colgate? In all of the articles written I have yet to read any statements about his fondness for Colgate, that he enjoyed his 4 years at Colgate...I have read that he hates the weather more than anything and that he couldn't wait to get out. I think he had other college options (assume scholarship offers as well, though I don't know if they were full ride), so what was the draw, exactly? Haven't heard him speak favorably or proudly of Colgate, so just wondering. And recently with some of the boys leaving AC early...maybe there's more to the picture than we're seeing.

Good questions, TchrBill. One has to wonder about these issues. It might be a good idea to promote UCONN for the ECAC and let Union go to HE..:)

On another note, it's been posted on the 'Gate voy forum that Chris Wagner has signed with the Anaheim Ducks. What does this mean for next season? Is he gone, or will he be back? (this being mearly a "signing" and that's all?). Sure hope we aren't losing our key guy for next season.

On the positive side Corbin McPherson has signed an ATA with the Albany Devils. Hope he can make it and stick with the AHL.

Re: Colgate offseason speculations

Kudos to Austin on all of the accolades.....well deserved!! From what I know and have heard about Austin, he had a great time at Colgate (except for the weather). Kevin McNamara will be playing hockey in Norway next year. His brother Jack decided Colgate wasn't the right fit and decided to transfer (to where, I don't know). The Captains for next year are Thomas Larkin, Nathan Sinz and Jeremy Price.

I saw something about this come across Twitter this morning, but the person tweeting didn't know if it was true or an April Fool's joke. Bottom line is that if he signed, he's gone.
