Cold Weather Gear

Gibber

Little Boxes
I'm looking for some advice. I'm trying to find some good, relatively inexpensive, since it's really only for one day's use (possibly more down the road but specifically for shooting Friday's two outdoor hockey games at Fenway) cold weather gear. I have a pretty good coat, hat and boots. I usually wear some thermal underwear (long-johnish) which do an ok job, but I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on something less bulky. I've been told UnderArmour stuff is good, but really expensive. I'm hoping to get an undershirt/pants/socks and even gloves... Any suggestions would be awesome.

Thanks in advance, and Happy New Year!

Re: Cold Weather Gear

I couldnt give you specific brands but I would try a outdoors shop..like Gander Mountain or cabelas or something. A lot of times they might have a lesser known brand that is just as good as the pricey ones. I have a pair of Gander Mountain overalls and a matching coat that are just as good as carhartt brand but cost me about half as much.

Good call, I'm sure we have EMS and LL Bean places around here that I should check out... :D

Re: Cold Weather Gear

Gib - just checkout the Kittery Trading Post. Tell'em what you need it for and they should get you all set. If you want to take a drive try REI in Reading MA and you can say hi to the UNH alums there. You can get same quality stuff much cheaper than UnderArmour if you have the time to shop.

The trading post would be a real good bet if you're nearby.

LL Bean is as expensive as Under Armor.

I found a couple of cold weather turtlenecks at TJ Maxx -- $12 each. They're just as good as the Under Armor that's 4x as expensive.

there's a TJ's right across the street from here... I will have to check them out tomorrow, thanks for that idea....

ah the Trading Post is a good idea too, wish I lived up there still, won't have a chance tomorrow when I'm up there for hockey, or I would do that.. whats REI?

Re: Cold Weather Gear

Gib - I would echo SteveP. LL Bean is expensive and I would include their outlets in that as well. KTP and REI you will pay for, but I forgot about TJ Maxx and also Marshall's. My son wears the cold weather "underarmour" stuff, but he always gets equal stuff - RBK, NIKE, Addidas, etc. at TJ Maxx or Marshalls. The key to cold weather gear is to layer. You'll be stylin'.

Good call SteveP.

Google REI - they are a serious outdoor hiking/camping outfitter. I like them better than EMS. Use them for info and then shop TJs.

Re: Cold Weather Gear

Not sure if these places are out in your neck of the woods, but this time or so last year (post-Christmas clearance) I scored some major deals on Nike and Under Armor stuff at Sports Authority and Dunham's. Items usually in the $30-50 range were going for $10-15.

Needless to say they come in handy at the outdoor rink. :)

Re: Cold Weather Gear

Thinsulate!! ;)

Amen. You can layer more effectively.

I'd wear synthetic long johns under thermals and then a pair of lined ski pants...gives you more motion than jeans.

I'd borrow stuff from a friend that hunts or skis a lot, they tend to have plenty of good stuff and you only need it for a few days...especially one of those full head socks tucked into a turtleneck...those aren't cool looking but they work.

If you don't have some kind of glove liner I'd suggest buying a pair if you are going to need to take your gloves off a lot to shoot pix. Pretty good range of motion and feel without exposing skin directly to the cold.

I prefer it due to profit sharing. :)
Layering really is the key and keeping your feet warm and dry is the key. Make sure you have something to wick moisture away from your feet or you will be miserable.

Re: Cold Weather Gear

I don't think it'll be THAT cold, probably in the low 20's, it'll just be long exposure (probably somewhere in the range of 3PM-10PM)...

Gonna see what our TJ Maxxxxxx has, tomorrow, before heading up to Durham.
There is a Sports Authority up the street too, I think. Probably worth checking that out...
Feet and hands will be my biggest issue, I think, so I gotta find some good socks and glove linings, and I should be ok, I reckon.

Thanks for some good ideas everyone.

If you're going anywhere in the Upper Midwest....I recommend a kerosene heater. It's *** cold out here (according to a local meteorologist...that's the scientific term).:D

Re: Cold Weather Gear

Picked up an undershirt and pants from 'Hot Chillys' at TJMaxx... seems to be pretty good. Also grabbed some (hopefully good) socks...

still have to figure out a glove situation and something for my face... Accuweather reports 'RealFeel' of -8 Degrees Friday night and possible snow...

awesome

Hot Chillys rock -- wore them when I lived in Aspen - kept me warm on the mountain all day long!

Ha! I worked there for 4 years before getting laid off a year ago tomorrow.

You'd better bring sunscreen and shorts! :D
