Certifications

Re: Certifications

I'm in IT which sort of started this certification crap and I used to be a junkie having logged about 10 IT Certs myself before I burned out. That being said I haven't done one since I went back to school and finished my Master's degree and I speak out against them frequently.

I can think of 3 reasons to get certified in anything.

1. Your employer paid for it.
2. Your sure your employer will pay you more if you get it.
3. Your sure you'll get employment if you get it.

Not sure if that helps, but there it is.

Well put. I have about a dozen certs in the AV industry, and not a single one has helped my career one shred.

Re: Certifications

Currently working on a Master's in IT Management, and I don't plan on doing any certs unless a future employer requires them.

Re: Certifications

I know the supply chain organizations here want/require everyone to have the APICS certification. I was working on my MA when the edict came down for everyone in my group to get their APICS but I ended up changing jobs so I never did it. If I was going to re-enter the supply chain area I most definately would get it.

There is also a lot of Lean stuff here but I haven't done any training there, the only six sigma I've done is green belt & design for six sigma (IIRC). Doesn't matter, they were both stooooopid. :)

I'm about 95% sure about #3. Every job I want wants Lean Sigma and most mention APICS. I was in supply chain while I was in college but moved away from it and now work as an Ops Supervisor for a security company and want out and back into supply chain. I can get the Lean cert through Villanova for 2k, and I'm still searching the horrible website APICS has trying to figure out how much that one will cost. Any more advanced certs of MBA in supply chain management will only happen at the expense of an employer.
