Very disappointed to not see Brittany Esposito on the U22. And before I get sniped I get that this team is scary loaded just was hoping to see her talent recognized.

I don't know if they're hoping players like Poulin, Fortino and Jenner will bring other players up or just trying to stack the team, but I think the women need to do what the men's teams have done and make it a policy that once you graduate to a higher level (certainly the Olympic and World Championships level), you don't play for the junior level teams anymore. Force new girls to step up, that's the point of these teams.

You are certainly correct here West. It is called the Canadian U22 Development Team and should be a chance for either the U18 grads and others who have been in the tryout mix (other 92's/93's) to show their stuff and impress the powers that be. At times it seems like both the USA and Hockey Canada sides are reluctant to find those 'diamonds in the rough' that may cause them to make the tough decisons and possibly knock a veteran player off the roster. I am sure there is a method to their maddness however and part of that is the want to win! We all know how good the Lam twins are along with Poulin, Fortino, Jenner etc. We saw that recently in Vermont.

Hockey Canada has announced its 4 Nations Roster.

Only two NCAA players were select, Brianne Jenner (Cornell) and Marie-Philip Poulin (BU). Most of the team currently plays in the CWHL.

Speaking of scary good, how about the 4 Nations roster?!? Yes, I admit it, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that there are two former Buckeyes on that roster! Go Tessa (the face of womens hockey if you subscribe to The Hockey News) and Natalie!

I believe you are correct. Only 4 players did not play in the NCAA, and three of those four are 30 or older. They were part of the tail end of the era when more good players stayed in Canada to play CIS.

Especially in DIII hockey and likely in D1 women's collegiate hockey is going to be very different. Many more Canadians are staying home now it will soon reach a tipping point (2-5 years?) where the competitive levels are nearly equal and the Canadians will want to stay home also for the cost advantage.

Some posters have been suggesting this for years. The numbers suggest otherwise. Going back all the way to 2005, the percentage of Canucks taking D1 spots has been consistently in the 40% range.

Cost advantage? I guess you're going to have to educate me. What's being offered that beats a full ride athletic scholarship at a U.S. school?

I understand that there are any number of legitimate reasons to go to school in one's home country. And for a non-scholarlship player, cost advantage likely does come into play. Another relevant scenario is the "scholarship caliber" player who wants to attend a school that doesn't offer athletic scholarships. But I think you can rest assured that Canada's world class players will continue to be offered full rides at U.S. schools. If they choose to stay home, it seems unlikely that cost would be main motivation.

The only way there will be a shift is if a large enough number of CIS schools can offer cost-free scholarships AND allow the top players to receive their carded athlete funding throughout the school year but the latter only covers a handful of players. Unless there's a way for a few schools to have their women's hockey teams play in the NCAA the best option for the non-carded players will be to head south which means the best competition for the top-tier of players will remain south as well.

It is very likely full scholarship NCAA players will continue to go to those US schools but the general trend is picking up last year and this year is for more DIII players to stay home. The trend at the moment is less severe for D1 players but could happen.

IMHO that D3 effect has got more to do with some D3 schools being sanctioned, rather than better offers from CIS schools. There are at least 5 schools with women's hockey that got hit with the Int Content rule over the last few years.

P.S. As a parent who had one D go south of the border and one stay north of the border, have a good grasp of the pro and cons to both. What was most important at the end of the day, is that they both ended up at one a school at the top of their list, and that it offered a good academic fit for them. In the end, that is much more important than the varsity fit.
