Buying hockey equipment in SF Bay area

Can anyone recommend a good place to get pads in the SF Bay area? I got rid of my old pads (for a variety of reasons) before moving out west and now I'm looking to get back into hockey. I'll probably join a beginner level adult league this season.

I'm less concerned with the best deal and more concerned with the best service in terms of fitting pads etc. although obviously good prices would be nice. At the moment I'm skating up but I'm still holding out hope for switching to goalie at some point in the not too distant future.

Bonus points if the place is somewhere between San Jose and San Francisco (on the peninsula is ideal) - East Bay is a bit of a haul for me.

Re: Buying hockey equipment in SF Bay area

Finally, a hockey question I sort of know the answer too!

I got my skates at East West Hockey in San Carlos. The sales people there were pretty attentive so I liked it. And it's close to the Ice Oasis so it's convenient if you want to get to a rink right after. There's also Power Play Hockey down in San Jose in the vicinity of the HP Pavilion near the Caltrain station. It has roughly the same selection, but I wasn't too crazy about the attention span of the people who worked there when I went in. Neither are huge warehouses or anything, I think there's some super huge store in Oakland that is but I forget the name

Re: Buying hockey equipment in SF Bay area

Sweet, thanks. Do you know if either of these guys do repairs? The mount on my left skate is cracked from the blade to the boot and I don't want to buy new skates unless I have to.

On the other hand, my skates are 10 year old Bauer 1000s, so maybe it's time for an upgrade. But they're so comfortable. . . sigh.

One more question - know any good places for skate sharpening?

I don't know, haven't come upon that yet, their websites might mention something. Roy82 would know more about Bay Area hockey stuff than me, but I don't know how often he's on here.

I got mine done at East-West since I bought them there and it's close to a rink, but I wouldn't consider myself an expect to say whether a place is good or not.

How big are you? I'm looking to unload my skater equipment. Wouldn't cost too much to send them.

Un Poco Lento - try asking this question over on ModSquadHockey as well. They are great over there at helping out especially when it comes to equipment at the local hockey shops. www.modsquadhockey.com

Cool, thanks. I don't think I'd know the difference between good and great, but I have had one or two terrible skate sharpening experiences over the years so I know when it's all kinds of wrong. I just want a place that won't screw it up. :)

I'm a shade under 5'9, medium build but skinny, so not built like a hockey player. ;) I have a slight preference for new stuff but if your gear is in good shape it might be worth it, at least for pants and such. I will want my own gloves and helmet - I'm really picky about fit there.

That said, if you live in a place where hockey is a normal activity then you're probably better off selling your stuff locally. Less hassle.

Thanks, I'll check it out.

Unless otherwise noted I'm the original owner, used them maybe a couple dozen times at best, and always aired out afterwards so there is no smell. I'll get my own images when I can get batteries for my camera. Just want to give you something visual until I can.

15$ - Easton Xtreme long elbow pads, like new but minor discoloration.

40$ - Easton Synergy 300 pants, basically new condition size large

20$ -Jofa 5500 16" shin guards, some minor wear on the front from when I lent them to a friend to play broomball with. Mostly just the paint being worn off. I also have some stretching velcro straps that make any kind of tape unneeded.

45$ - Jofa jdp 400 chest protector size xl, got this through the MTU team used, really good condition, just some paint wear on the plastic shoulder caps.

15$ - A CCM 652 bag. The shoulder strap ripped out basically the first time I used them and the hockey shop in downtown Houghton had it fixed and it happened again, but I've been using the hand carry straps for shoulder ones and that works better than any shoulder strap I've ever used. Basically just some minor scuffs aside from that.

This is the only image I found of the back of it, the front has a pocket that runs completely across the front.
