Brown visits RPI again, Saturday, March 5th

Re: Brown visits RPI again, Saturday, March 5th

So on to Hahvard.
Back from the game. Believe it or not, they really didn't play bad in the first period despite the 3-0 score. Brown only had a few chances, but took advantage of most of them.
Both Bubela goals were beauts. A couple of high snap shots just under the crossbar. Or as flaggy would call it, top shelf where mama hides the cookies.
Riley's tying goal was on a rebound with a wide open net. Maybe this will get him some confidence next weekend. And the GWG goal was set up by a fantastic play by Jake Wood, as he fought off a couple of Brown defenders behind the net and got the puck out to Wilson who just rocketed one into the net.
btw, yes Doc, there were two pucks on the ice. Not really sure how the other one got there, but one was at the faceoff dot outside the blue line and the other was down in one of the corners. Been a long time since I've seen that...

I have not given up even on tonight. We can score and thankfully, Brown is not a top ten team. But every season we seem to be unchanged (even when we have an entirely new recruit class).

Kasdorf now has to have the best 40 minutes possible. We have to pitch a shutout from here on to have any chance

Jenny and i were at HFH perhaps 25 years ago and saw the same thing-two pucks on the ice. One had been lost in a player's equipment earlier and never found until it popped out a period later. My point was simple, these things happen while we have control of the puck and the whistle blows. It never seems to happen and they blow the whistle when other teams control the puck. Just an odd thing.

Sometimes 50 years and over 1000 games of RPI hockey can give you an odd perspective. It helps some of the time to have Jen giving me a completely different perspective. She watches things and sees things happening on the ice or on the bench that i just never seem to catch. this game, as depressing as falling behind was, just had the feel of one we could win.

Re: Brown visits RPI again, Saturday, March 5th

I think that we match up fairly well with either team but i would prefer we play in Boston than in canton. Harvard just does not draw the crowd or get the fan support. i think our history of games in Canton has just been more of a problem and the officiating more suspect. Harvard is puzzle wrapped in an enigma. They can be the best in the nation one night and just a different team the next night. If we catch them like they were out west at a neutral site, we do not have a prayer. But if we play them as we did the other 2 times (even with them outshooting us badly), anything can happen.

Agreed.

Big night for Seth and the team. :D:D:D

Enjoy the double gimlet... ;) I had an irish coffee (decaf at this hour) :)

Re: Brown visits RPI again, Saturday, March 5th

Wow, great comeback last night. The team never gave up and was rewarded with a win.
They came out skating hard and taking it to Brown, but forgot how to kill a penalty. Both PP goals were caused by our running around the ice.
Getting a goal early in the second gave the team life and the rest was history.
Both teams missed empty nets during the course of the game, and the officiating was awful. I don't usually mind the refs letting things go as long as they are consistent, but missing a clear elbow to one of our players head is inexcusable.
We are going to have to be a lot better next week.
But for now, I will enjoy last nights win.
Way to go red!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Brown visits RPI again, Saturday, March 5th

I was at the game last night in section 17 so I got a real good look at the first 5 goals. A great comeback spearheaded by Milos who said jump on my back boys (of course that was after his first period penalty) - a 180 degree turn-around after he was all but invisible in game 1. I agree that the team did not play all that badly in the first period but the breakdowns and bounces hurt. The Defense has to learn to get back as Kazzy is left alone far too often. I think it is a combination of lack of anticipation and communication. How many times have we seen the opponent's score on that backdoor play? Discipline boys! The refs were way inconsistent all night. And it went both ways. But I ask how the Brown coach didn't get a delay of game penalty for that filibuster at the refs? My biggest concern was the Kazzy was not controlling the rebounds - too many and too juicy for a top-notch goalie. To their credit, the team did not give up after falling behind 3-0 (maybe because they overcame that same score against Brown earlier?). One final thing - we overpass and give up opportunities to take a shot way too often. A decent shot is better than none at all which is what they often wind up with when jockeying for that perfect opportunity. All that said, I'll take the sweep and the Sunday 'mini-bye'.

On to Harvard. Will probably be at the Saturday game to watch us punch our ticket to Placid.

Here is another instance of two pucks. In this case a stupid fan screwed the Rangers by throwing a second puck over the glass. For you younger fans - in those days the glass was lower and there were no nets (bleeders in the stands were commonplace). I witnessed this one in person also at MSG. http://www.nytimes.com/1993/01/12/sports/hockey-two-pucks-for-the-rangers-but-just-one-point.html Here is another. So last night was the third I've witnessed in person https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zWcukuW8QQ.

I spotted a gentleman in a suit having some words with Whittet as he was on his way to the dressing room after the 2nd period. My assumption is that it was a league official telling him to cool down. Whittet was relatively silent behind the bench throughout the third period after that.

This isn't the first time Whittet's done something like this. If I remember correctly, he protested at every icing call during the 2013 playoffs in order to buy his players rest time.
