Brown Hockey 2010-2011 - Onward and Upward

Re: Brown Hockey 2010-2011 - Onward and Upward

I'm going to steal from the Harvard thread: the future looks bright, for Brown (not so much for Harvard, because they have to attend Harvard ;) ).

Very cool that Pietrus was honored. Let's hope we have a team full of award-winners next season.

Re: Brown Hockey 2010-2011 - Onward and Upward

Aaron Volpatti is one of five Brown male athletes selected to the winter Academic All-Ivy team.

Volpatti's major is Human Biology.

Re: Brown Hockey 2010-2011 - Onward and Upward

We were thrilled when we found out at the Frozen Four about the Unsung Hero award going to Pietrus. This is terrific! Well-deserved!

You could not have said it better. The award speaks well of Brown's program and is another encouraging sign of the progress of the program.

I have not seen anything about the award in the providence Journal. I know the coverage of Brown sports is down but the award is something that is worth an article. "For What It's Worth", I sent an email to Bill reynolds about it.

Re: Brown Hockey 2010-2011 - Onward and Upward

Bill Reynolds is too busy fawning over Keno Davis to care about anything going on at Brown.

Mike, thanks for taking this initiative.

Jeanne Carhardt, the men's hockey SID, does a terrific job publicizing the accomplishments of the team and nominating players for different awards, sometimes enlisting the help of the team's faculty advisor to write letters. Nevertheless, the Providence Journal is a bit slow in picking up this information.

WOW - That's an aggressive out of conference schedule. Playing at UNH followed by a game at Agganis. With the possibility to play BU later in the year again at a tournament hosted by Notre Dame! This is one of the most aggressive nonconf. schedules I've ever seen out of Brown. I'm excited. Definitely going to be making my way to the Whitt and Agganis.

Oh, my. That is one tough schedule, especially following up on the heels of AIC, Bentley, UConn, Providence, and Princeton. I am not really a fan of the Ivy Showcase thing; I'd much rather play a couple other HE or AHA teams to open up the season. I also wish we could get Harvard for Senior Night; I think the team would get pretty amped up for that. Or maybe a home-and-home travel partner series on the last week of the season for every team (closing against Yale for two games isn't a lovely thought for the present, but it would definitely create a nice rivalry in the long run).

I like the idea of a Senior Day against Harvard, but unfortunately, I don't see that happening any time soon. Because Harvard has the Beanpot, they play games on consecutive weeks on Mondays. Therefore, they can't play Friday, Saturday, Monday two weeks in a row - that's just illogical. So they have to split games in order to make it work. Brown is always one of the teams because of the distance factor. It's easy to make Brown play at Harvard on a Tuesday night because it's only an hour drive. This way Yale can play at Harvard on a corresponding Friday (giving Harvard the off day on Saturday) around the Beanpot (thereby not ruining the travel weekend for Yale with Harvard and Dartmouth), and Brown plays just one game that weekend at Dart.

I hope that makes sense, but it's all mostly because of the Beanpot that Brown always plays at Harvard on a Tuesday night. And while I think Brown gets the raw end of the deal, I respect the decision not to make Harvard play so many games involving the Beanpot. And the Beanpot, while all non conference games, will always take preference.

That's the way Brendan wants it. He doesn't believe that it helps to play weak teams outside the conference either from the point of view of the development of players or the visibility of the Brown program.

I love this schedule. It shows guts as well as the commitment to improve the program and match up with the best.

I like it, too, although it makes me a little nervous. Still, as one who watched Brown play BU, Maine, Northeastern, etc. in the old ECAC before Hockey East, I am excited about the potential quality of play. It's always better to play a bit above your level, in my opinion.

Re: Brown Hockey 2010-2011 - Onward and Upward

Some scoring ability (Juola, Goldberg).

"Some" scoring ability... Is that a lukewarm description, Euler? I'd love to see us get a real playmaker with a wicked, quick shot who can put Brown on the scoreboard more, and I don't mean for penalties.

I get what you're saying, and it does make total sense, but both Harvard games are on weekends this year. If only Vermont hadn't left the league, and we were still travel partners...
