so sorry to hear this. enjoyed having them in the WCHA and especially enjoyed visiting Huntsville to play them. this move feels forced. and, again, I am sorry to hear it.

This is bad news, and I'm guessing that other marginal programs could be forced to do the same.

Tough times.

Sad to see any team leave.

Maybe this is where LIU gets Thor players from. COVID was probably the excuse the school needed to pull the plug

UAH also put other cost-saving measures in place, including a hiring freeze, “heightened review of spending, cancellations of faculty sabbaticals, and a temporary suspension of the 4033(b) voluntary employer match."

Plunging state budgets and a failure to get the proposed multi-use facility approved ended the program. There were a lot of other bullet wounds along the way, but this was the double-tap.

I hate seeing this. Huntsville has been a great rivalry and the trips, always enjoyable. To the people of Huntsville, thank you for many great experiences and the incredible hospitality. To Mike & staff, I wish you all the best!

Laura Stickells from Fairbanks Daily News Miner reports that Alaska Nanook head coach says a conference call is set for next week.

“We’re going to have to hopefully not make drastic changes to the schedule, but there’s definitely going to have to be some changes where we are hosting another team up in Fairbanks and playing them four times now. And we are going to another place where we were only going to play them twice,” UAF head coach Erik Largen said over the phone on Friday.

If the WCHA adjusts the conference schedule by adding a series between teams that were only going to face off twice and by balancing home and away contests, the Nanooks will add a road series against Bemidji State or Michigan Tech and will add a home series against Ferris State or Northern Michigan.

Only seems fair to have a schedule equally balanced between home & away games, while holding total games relatively constant.

From a geographical standpoint it just didn’t make much sense unfortunately. Maybe if some Texas and Florida schools had developed a league.

But it's got to be done if you want D1 hockey to grow. Gotta prime the pump. If you don't care about college hockey growth, about more opportunities for kids, about improved competition, then don't travel. Obviously has to be balanced with budgets and maybe a D1aa division makes sense for those with limited finances?

Yes, weird. When I lived in Atlanta I was closer to Detroit than Miami (Florida)

Isn't that weird?

Just off the top of my head - some of the powers that be at UAH have been trying to drop hockey for awhile. Maybe COVID, plus being dropped by the WCHA - or CCHA 2.0 - gave them just the right excuse to drop. I will miss them.

NMU loses 2 home games against UAH, it’s not likely they’d swap those for a road trip to Fairbanks. That would give NMU only 12 home and 16 away.

I am of two minds about expansion. I would like the game to grow, but the timing is terrible financially unless it is bankrolled by a donor. Even before COVID, tuition was too high across the board to be able to undertake these projects at most schools.

I am also a little skeptical about the calls for expansion due to a larger talent pool. I have seen no small amount of offensively-challenged DI teams the last few years. The level of skating appears better, but maybe that's negated the space needed to create scoring chances. I wonder what the stats say about that aspect of the product.

Kind of like ASU now having 12 home games & 20 road after HC reneged on their return trip ASU games.

Inflation corrected tuition is the same as in the 1970's.
You could be correct on the remainder.

Inflation corrected tuition is the same as in the 1970's.

This article reaches a different conclusion--inflation-adjusted tuition levels are still 2 to 3 times higher than in 1969: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/average-cost-college-jumped-incredible-122000732.html . I think it is also relevant that the cost of attendance for many schools has grown to well exceed the caps on federally subsidized student loans during that period. My only point is that I am not sure there is room for tuition to grow much further in the current environment, even pre-covid, which will necessarily impact hockey expansion and athletic spending.
