US News & World Report has published its list of the top-400 universities in the world.

http://www.usnews.com/education/wor...ings/top-400-universities-in-the-world?page=1

For universities playing NCAA Division 1 ice hockey, here is the top-10 (and their world rankings):

1. Harvard (ECAC), 2
2. Yale (ECAC), 4
3. Princeton (ECAC), 13
4. Michigan (CCHA), 14
5. Cornell (ECAC), 15
6. Brown (ECAC), 39
7. Wisconsin (WCHA), 41
8. Boston University (Hockey East), 70
9. Dartmouth (ECAC), 99
10. Minnesota (WCHA), 112

Future D1 hockey school Penn State would be No. 9 in the hockey list at No. 94 overall.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute: Academic Reputation score: "not available" Employer Reputation Score: "not available" and so without those two metrics it is listed in the low 200s? and it is not listed under "engineering" at all???

:p:confused::confused:

Re: Best D1 hockey universities (US News & World Report)

"But Notre Dame wouldn't fit in with the Big Ten because of the academics!!1!"

Turns out they were right.

Employer Reputation sucked so much that SAJ refused to have it published. :D

Re: Best D1 hockey universities (US News & World Report)

Not to be argumentative but you're really not proving anything by using the world list. Reason being that the term "university" means fundamentally different things in different cultures and in different parts of the world. No matter how much USNWR tries to crunch the numbers, you're necessarily comparing apples to oranges to grapefruits to pomegranates to prunes.

If what you want to do is compare the USNWR ranking of U.S. universities with Division I hockey programs, you need to use the "U.S. National Universities" category which, while still not perfect, at least attempts to compare universities of the same general size, type and purpose. (http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities). When you pluck out the D1 hockey schools, here's how they line up by USNWR ranking:

1. Harvard (ECAC) 1
1. Princeton (ECAC) 1
3. Yale (ECAC) 3
4. Dartmouth (ECAC) 11
5. Brown (ECAC) 15
5. Cornell (ECAC) 15
7. Notre Dame (CCHA) 19
8. Michigan (CCHA) 28
9. Boston College (HEA) 31
10. Wisconsin (WCHA) 42
11. RPI (ECAC) 50
12. Boston University (HEA) 53
13. Ohio State (CCHA) 55
14. UConn (AHA) 58
15. Northeastern (HEA) 62
16. Minnesota (WCHA) 68
17. Michigan State (CCHA) 71
18. Vermont (HEA) 82
18. Denver (WCHA) 82
20. Miami (CCHA) 90
21. UMass (HEA) 94
22. New Hampshire (HEA) 101
23. Michigan Tech (WCHA) 115
24. Clarkson (ECAC) 119
25. Maine (HEA) 152
26. North Dakota (WCHA)164
27. UMass-Lowell (HEA) 177
28. Western Michigan (CCHA) 181
29. Alabama-Huntsville (Ind) 190

Like I said, the resulting list isn't perfect. Army, Air Force, and Colorado College are all carried in the "National Liberal Arts College" category, while others, like Merrimack and UMD, are carried in one of several "Regional Universities" categories. Still, this is better than trying to compare any of them to, say, King Saud University or the University of Utrecht.

how does it make any sense that in the same magazine's top 100 US universities, BC is above BU, but here BU is above BC?????? (by a good number btw)

The World list is basically unuseable. I don't know why they even do it except for the fact they're probably making money on it somehow. Strange things happen when you try to compare vastly different institutions with very little in common.

Just shows there's a stat for just about everything.

I don't remember, it was either King Saud or King Fahd (#221) that had a goalie who was an absolute sieve :( The football team was solid, though.

Actually the world rankings is more comprehensive. The world rankings take into account a universities' research prowess. graduate and professional schools, and undergraduate programs. The USNWR best college rankings is only undergraduate, lacking any acknowledgement of undergraduate research, relying mostly on subjective metrics such as reputation (how one can measure reputation is beyond me as a physicist).

They should factor in the average amount of debt upon graduation.

I completely agree with they should factor in debt following graduation. However, I believe this somewhat taken into consideration with the average scholarship support metric in the USNWR Top Colleges Ranking.

Honestly, it is difficult to compare the top college rankings and the top world college rankings. Both lists are examining universities at a different aspect. The World ranking is more of a research capability ranking, while the top US college ranking is ranking from a degree value point of view. That is the reason you see Notre Dame in the top 20 in the US ranking and in the 200's in the world ranking. Notre Dame, outside of their business and law schools and seminary, is for the most part a liberal arts college. Notre Dame provides a world class undergraduate education. However, cranking out PhD's in science and engineering is not in ND's mission.

You're absolutely correct. Intercollegiate athletics is an appendage of undergraduate education in the U.S. That's why I offered a ranking based on the U.S. National Universities category earlier in the thread. Makes more sense to compare apples to apples.
