One of the NBA players specifically took himself out of games so people betting the under on his stats would get huge payouts.

On March 23, 2023, Rozier, while playing for the Hornets, let others close to him know that he planned to leave early with injury. Associates bet more than $200,000 on Rozier's unders and winnings were delivered to Rozier's home, the indictment alleges.

It's pretty ironic that athletes can't gamble when people make so much money on them because of gambling.

And it's really funny how this scandal was presented on ESPN this morning- as part of ESPN Bet.....

Shocking.... that it has taken so long.

And Pete Rose is still kept out of the HOF.

I would think most athletes/coaches know that this kind of stuff is pretty easy to spot now. Only way you can get away with it is by betting small amounts. With all that being said, sports going big into the gambling was penny wise pound foolish.

Seriously, is anyone surprised? This was an inevitability given where so much money is coming from INTO sports as sponsors. Just wait until it's some college player that gets some kind of NIL deal with a shadow company of a casino.

So I just watched a short video where Pablo Torre was asked for a summary of the scandal- and it sure seems a LOT deeper than what is being reported.

The basic report is that Rozier is being accused of faking an injury to make sure he does not reach his betting line points, right? Seems like it would be him and maybe someone else trying to help him within the team.

But more happened than that- apparently, there was a significant increase in betting, so the casinos reported this to the NBA as unusual- which is apparently the mechanism. (didn't know that, but it makes sense that casinos look out for cheating). So the NBA opened an investigation.

It didn't get anywhere, but it was never closed. And sounds like it was moved to a different entity that was to continue it.

Here's the kicker- Rozier was on the NO Pelicans when it happened. For some reason, the NBA did NOT tell the Miami Heat about the open gambling investigation on Rozier during the trade. Why in the world would the NBA hide that? Kind of curious there.

I did learn that with the current betting platforms, it's a WHOLE lot easier to cheat than just throw games. All of these side bets make it able for one player to easily miss his target *whatever* of a game. Really easy. Team can even win the game, and you can cheat.
