Was just in Barcelona for a weekend about a month ago - my first time. Didn't have time to really explore, so we focused on hitting the Gaudi highlights (Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, etc) and chowing on some paella. I loved it - would definitely like to go back. If you're into architecture and/or cathedrals at all, definitely go to the Sagrada Familia - it is breathtaking. It is an amazing ball of contradictions - clearly inspired by classical Gothic cathedrals, but every twist is modern and yet its design is more than 100 years old. Absolutely stunning.

Rome is probably my favorite city in Europe - the public art and history is just overwhelming (I took Latin in high school and was a Roman history buff for a short while, so that helps). The food in Rome is right up my alley - excellent without being pretentious and much cheaper than most other big cities. Well, I'm sure there are expensive places, too, but 15 euro will get you an great meal at a sidewalk cafe, so why bother? If you only have one day in Rome, it would be a really tough call between the Forum/Colosseum or the Vatican - I wouldn't recommend trying to do both in one day. No matter which you decide, I would recommend going by the Trevi Fountain - maybe a trifle cliche, but it is definitely worth a quick detour.

Can't help you with Naples/Florence/Nice....yet.

Extra nights in Barcelona or Madrid?

If you are into art, both have some great museums to see. Madrid has the classic Prado, as well as a Picasso museum (where you can see his classic Guernica); while Barcelona has both a Picasso and a Miro museum.

We really love both cities- but Barcelona in particular- the old city is great to wander around in.

Do a search on both- I think Swami posted some really good info about the area in general.

If you choose Forum/Colosseum, don't forget Palatine Hill.

In addition to the post below (which includes my Barcelona, Rome and Florence thoughts) I also really like Naples.

The City of Naples is not all that charming, but there is a fantastic archeology museum there. The other attraction is pizza, which started here at Pizzeria Brandi, which was good. but te pizza at Da Michele is unbelievable. http://www.damichele.net/

Just outside the city on the suburban trains, you also visit the Pompeii and Herculaneum ruins, which are totally amazing if you want to know what it was like to live in in Roman times, and if you are a ruins freak like I am, you can also see the old Roman Ampitheatre at Pozzuoli.
