B1G 2018-19 Rise to the Top?

Even though it's the beginning of the season does anyone feel our conference will have a strong Frozen Four presence again this season?

Re: B1G 2018-19 Rise to the Top?

I don't see why not. 4 top 10 teams and 6 in the top 15. We should have the tournament invites to have a shot, but anything can happen once the tournament starts. I'm not holding my breath for 3. Two wouldn't shock me, and I certainly expect one............preferably with buckeye leaves on their helmets.

Re: B1G 2018-19 Rise to the Top?

It's shocking how quickly the B1G has become the top conference in college hockey.

Re: B1G 2018-19 Rise to the Top?

Of course it's only the beginning of the season but debate, discussion, speculation and eventual bragging rights are what we're here for.
Some of the "other" conference's fans seemed to resent the strong showing we had in the last post season but does the B1G have what it takes to a perennial contender for top conference?

Re: B1G 2018-19 Rise to the Top?

Have to win the big one to strengthen any claim as best conference.
So all the other teams in a particular conference can be mediocre or worse but if one stands out and wins the FF that automatically makes their conference the best?

I'd be perfectly happy if every year the B1G put 3 teams in the Frozen Four, an NCHC team walked away with the title, but you guys spend your time proclaiming the B1G the "best." Works great for me.

Not automatically but right now the NCHC is the best conference. This could be the year the Big Ten takes over but if the NCHC wins it all again they have the best claim since we all know they are more than one good team.

Re: B1G 2018-19 Rise to the Top?

Right now the NCHC is like the SEC and the Big Ten is like... the Big Ten I guess?

Even though the big one escaped the Big Ten last season I'd say the statement of 3 B1G teams in the FF was not a fluke and to go out on a limb I'd say, at least on paper, the B1G will have the most teams in the dance next spring.

The NCHC is going to be nowhere close to being the best conference this year, at least in terms of interconference records, teams in the tournament, or even title contenders, imho. I expect this to be a very down year for the conference, although I think there is a lot of good young talent playing here. The attrition in the form of the loss of top coaches and players leaving early for the pros is finally going to catch up to the league.

That said, I continue to believe that the NCHC will hold it's own as one of the best college hockey conferences going forward, notwithstanding some significant disadvantages its teams may face in terms of money, television exposure, geography, etc..., compared with a conference like the B1G.

Re: B1G 2018-19 Rise to the Top?

I know the Big Ten has had the best overall intra-conference at least once, but it's time to finally also get the better of the NCHC head to head.

It was quite a while back (hint: last year :p )

It is surprising the success the NCHC has achieved head to head with the B1G, but that probably had to do in large part with down programs at Wisconsin and MSU. I expect the 21-61-8 record to start reversing itself.

Number of teams in the Frozen Four is the deciding factor now? Not head to head or the team that wins the title? Funny how that worked out. The one year the B1G even competes with the NCHC, they win the comparison because of one cherry-picked criteria.

Congrats, I guess.

Re: B1G 2018-19 Rise to the Top?

Define "to the top"? Rise out of mediocrity? Win the first title in a dozen years? What are your criterias? Put a few teams in the frozen four, beat a NCHC team and suddenly be top league in the country? Guess this rivalry has made people forget about the conferences out east. B1G really needs to beat one conference, then another, and then one after that to get to the top..ECAC and Hockey East have had better success since the Big 10 split, you think they will also just fade away while the big 10 creates their own Division 0 conference so good they will become semi-pro and no longer allowed to compete against other NCAA schools and will eventually start scheduling AHL competition?
I get your optimism. I can't help but think Minnesota and Michigan could have much brighter futures ahead than as of late but seems like somebody is forgetting what a hole they've already dug. But as long as it's what you think, that'll do

I thought 3 teams in the Frozen Four was a statement of particular accomplishment.
Win first title in a dozen years? Unless it was just sarcasm we're in our 6th season as a conference.
And as far as beating one conference and then another and another, wasn't that what we did in the tournament? Were not the teams we beat in the tourney the best representation of their conferences? Unless I didn't understand you clearly then your questions are answered.

UMD was not the best representative of the NCHC. They hold the dubious honor of being a National Champion with the worst regular season record ever. Had the Gophers won only one game of the last four they lost to Penn St., UMD would not have been in the tournament. SCSU was statistically the best.

It's not statistically accurate to use only a "one-and-done" tournament format to rank teams.

Nice to see B1G teams improving. But IMHO this thread is premature. I don't pay much attention to the poles this early in the season. ;)
