ASU to B1G?

ASU to the B1G always made sense to me. Join a conference with schools of similar sizes and budgets for the athletic department. Even in the NCHC, ASU would be considerably larger in total scale than the next largest (which I bet is a MAC team). If there's ever a conflict that deals with budget, the B1G schools are so much closer to ASU, there would probably be less issues for the smaller schools- since there's pretty much no such thing. Even OSU, who has the most questionable hockey spending (seeing what I read on OSU threads), it's a massive school with a massive athletic budget overall.

So politics would be similar to what ASU is used to.

edit- let alone the movement of P12 teams to the B1G already..... If anything, hurt feelings over that would prevent the move.

Seems like the right place for ASU. Hopefully things will fall together to get it done. Only reason I would like to see them remain independent is that they are willing to schedule the Alaska schools.

Now that ASU is AAU, it absolutely makes sense. While I still think they're behind Washington and Oregon, I also think that they're now on the board for consideration as a full membership expansion candidate.

I've also wondered, with the playoff expansion essentially locking Notre Dame into independence for the foreseeable future, how long term their membership is. Letting them in was clearly a move on the chess board towards full membership, and that's now off the table. There's no love between the domers and the B1G, and if the latter can find two new members, it might be time to send the domers back to the CCHA.

If things that "make sense" were how college hockey was run, we wouldn't have a lot to talk about. Instead is is political, perception, and financial reasons that things happen.

The B1G while thinking they hit a gold mine in USC and UCLA may have missed the mark in expansion. The B1G footprint is bleeding citizens as the Midwest is one of the areas of the country that is losing pace in population. California may be not far behind but if they do keep pace, it may not be in the right demographics for college sports. Expanding to the deep south or southwest would have been a smarter move and that would mean Arizona State and perhaps Florida State or Miami. That is where the people are moving to and the recruiting field is very strong in Florida as well. The B1G may well find itself outpaced by the SEC in expansion unless they look at future trends better.

I think it was a short term cash grab/expand their marketing footprint and less about the long term movement of people within the US.

With the leagues breaking their historic geographic boundaries, NIL, push to pay players, agents/advisors more involved,... the NCAA we know today isn't going to exist in the near future. I think the leagues know it and the B1G wanted to be coast to coast and seen as the biggest to be in the drivers seat for that next round of realignment/whatever comes next.

I'm betting that the B1G sees hockey less like BB and FB, meaning that there's not a good reason to boot ND for hockey- other than hurt feelings. I don't see them going back to the CCHA given the size of budgets and the reason why many of the current CCHA was abandoned for the NCHC.

How many years has Johns Hopkins been part of B1G Lacrosse?

I'm not arguing for or against your point here- you make good points.

But I would argue that that is a football/basketball move, and don't confuse those with hockey. Hockey is a niche sport in the B1G, so having niche agreements makes a lot of sense. If more of the rest of the P12 starts hockey, I can see some change, or if some of the bigger western schools do something. But until then, a niche agreement between a P12 team and the B1G for hockey makes more sense.

You could say the precedent concerning niche agreements has been set with ND in B1G hockey

Read a headline that they may be applying to NCHC? Some comments wondered if Miami would go to the CCHA.

It would be a good "out" for Miami. Something tells me for all their whining and crying, they won't leave and continue to be the punching bag of the league while the checks roll in.
