OK... I saw this on the bus yesterday while couch-hunting... they're closing some subway stations this (Columbus Day weekend) for track maintenence... this was the notification in spanish

durante el fin de semana del dia de la raza

Yahoo says this translates as

during the weekend of the day of the race

But "la raza" IIRC doesn't refer to road races but rather ethnic races... specifically some form of hispanic race.

So, those of you familiar with spanish or hispanics... what the hell does it mean and why is it an alternative translation for "Columbus Day weekend"?

I seem to remember that the old Duluth mayor called it "Indigenous Persons Day" to court votes. So, maybe it's a similar way to become politically correct and inclusive for all ethnic groups.

They're both right...the literal translation is "during the weekend of the day of the race"
