Approved Changes by the DIII Championship Committee

I missed this when the story first came out. Here are some changes that the NCAA Division III Championships Committee recommended and had funding approved by the NCAA Strategic Planning and Finance Committee:

1) The women's hockey bracket expands to 11 bids.

2) Conference opponents will be separated from each other in the first round when making brackets (I'm unclear as to if this will take priority over the 500-mile rule. I'm skeptical, but the next change might make that slightly more likely).

3) Ground transportation costs will be reimbursed by the NCAA. (My understanding is that prior to this, the NCAA covered flights but not buses. If the NCAA is now on the hook regardless of the method maybe they are actually planning on not having the bracket be dictated by location. Maybe they will allow flights to prevent intra-conference but not full bracket integrity?).

4) NCAA patches for the jerseys of all championship participants.

The DIII Championships Committee asked members for feedback regarding bench size limits. The feedback indicated that while most were satisfied with the bench size, many schools wanted scratched players to be able to wear their uniforms and warm up with the team on championship weekend and that not being allowed has negatively impacted athlete experience. The Championships Committee has recommended to the DIII Management Council that current bench size, squad size and travel party limits remain in place but that all student-athletes be allowed to warm up in uniform at the championships. I don't think they need approval from NCAA Strategic Planning and Finance Committee since leaving travel party limits unchanges means there's no additional cost involved.

I’m not quite sure how this works, but are these changes going to happen? Or is a recommendation just as the name suggests? What I’m trying to get at is what percent chance would everyone think that these above changes are made?

I read it as items 1 - 4 had money approved so I think they are happening.

And the scratched players in uniform thing will probably be approved by the next tourney if it hasn't already been. It costs nothing and harms no one. The only potential problem I can forsee, someone trying to sneak in a scratched player into a game, is so bush league and easy to catch that I don't think any coach good enough to make it to a championship weekend would risk their job and reputation to try it.

Thanks Scott,

Wow, that definitely changes things up for next season. With the travel reimbursements, it will be very intriguing to see what becomes of the 500 mile rule next season in regards to seeding and the aforementioned potential conference matchups they would try to avoid. Not to mention another first round matchup, I would imagine. I wonder if they would try to split up conference matchups in the quarterfinals as well.

Thought I’d try a test bracket you guys could potentially doublecheck since I’m having hockey withdrawals lol

Assumptions:

-11 team field (4 pool C bids)
-no conference matchups in First Round only (Quarterfinals and after are fine)
-no huge changes to the bracketing with the new travel reimbursements (i.e. 500-mile rule still in place for the most part; would only pay for flight if they absolutely had to/to avoid conference game in round 1)

With that being said, here would be my projected seeds

1. Middlebury (NESCAC autobid, PW #1)
2. River Falls (Pool C, PW #2)
3. Plattsburgh (NEWHL autobid, PW #3)
4. Nazareth (UCHC autobid, PW #4)
5. Elmira (NEHC autobid, PW #5)
6. Gustavus (MIAC autobid, PW #6)
7. Eau Claire (Pool C, PW #7)
8. Colby (Pool C, PW #8)
9. Endicott (CCC autobid, PW #9)
10. Cortland (Pool C, PW #10)
11. Aurora (NCHA autobid, PW #18)

First Round

Cortland at Endicott
Eau Claire at Gustavus
Aurora at River Falls

Quarterfinals

CORT/END at Middlebury
Elmira at Nazareth
Colby at Plattsburgh
UWEC/GAC vs AUR/UWRF

In 2022’s version, I can’t see much changing other than the extra play-in game. The 4 western teams are so isolated from the East that they would have those 4 duke it out just as it went down in real-life (assuming the new reimbursement policy doesn’t radically shift things). Thus, Cortland and Endicott would play as the bottom 2 remaining seeds. The bracket in this case would be pretty similar assuming I didn't mess anything up and that conference members could potentially play in the Quarterfinals.

Thoughts?

It's just so stupid that both the women's D1 and D3 tournaments have an 11 team field instead of just going ahead and making it a 12 team field, which seems inevitable anyway. Having 12 teams makes everything a lot better and easier. Come on NCAA, just do the right thing and go with 12 teams!!
