Anyone ever raised abandoned baby birds? Help!

Has anyone ever successfully helped raise abandoned baby birds? We found two outside our house and they seem relatively healthy but the mom hasn't returned for a few days so they haven't eaten in at least two days. I placed their nest in a box in the shade for today but i'm not sure what to do when I get home tonight. I've been told everything from grinding up worms and feeding them with an eye dropper, to mushing up dog food in water and feeding them that.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
