The USCHO Fan Forum has migrated to a new plaform, xenForo. Most of the function of the forum should work in familiar ways.
Please note that you can switch between light and dark modes by clicking on the gear icon in the upper right of the main menu bar.
We are hoping that this new platform will prove to be faster and more reliable. Please feel free to explore its features.
Just wondering if anyone here is a USA hockey official.
I'm planning on registering as a Level 1 referee next fall when seminars are offered again, and I was just wondering what to expect from the seminar and exam.

Yep, been reffing for 9 years now. The seminar is likely going to be some on-ice instruction, and mostly off-ice instruction in the form of powerpoints, and general discussions. The exam, while open book, can tend to be a bit tricky, with some questions that really make you wonder both ways.

Thanks! Is there anything specific you would recommend studying? I've read through the rulebook and casebook, and I typically have a good memory (I know, it's open book).

Not really, there are usually numerous questions on points of emphasis, and then various questions regarding playing rules and situations. It's open book, don't kill yourself

No there is nothing to study. I think as a level one they will give you a basic officials manual in the seminar that will go over positioning and the like. Next year is not a rule change year, so the seminar should be a little quicker than a new rules year, but expect it to take a full day, plan on giving up a full Saturday or Sunday. Go ahead and get your ref sweater and black helmet ahead of time.
I met a new level one in early January who still didn't have a sweater and he said he wasn't getting games, so it wasn't worth it...well no doubt, you're still not ready.

Haha, noted. I'm not sure how many games I'll get anyway - I'm female. I've only run across a couple of female refs while I've been playing. But even if I don't, I want to do it anyway.

There are a bunch of girls teams, so that's what I'm hoping for. In a couple of years when and if I make Level 3, there are a ton of adult womens' teams as well.
