Another Bad Coaching Decision

Some of you may already be aware of this since it's from last spring but i just saw it discussed on the news today for the first time.

How'd you like to have this guy coaching your kid?

A few mixed reactions. (1) Inexcusable. (2) Prior convictions?!?! Don't they run background checks in Canada? (3) You just wonder what may have led up to this. Was the kid a hack? Was he taking cheap shots? I know nothing of the particulars of this game, but when you see videos like this without surrounding context, it's hard to say what might have led the coach to do this. Still, if there were issues during the game, an adult coach needs to find appropriate ways of dealing with it. Clearly, epic fail on the coach's part. Smile, you're on youtube!

(2) Yes background checks are required. However, due to the cost and time required to get such checks done, generally a new police check is required at the start of the season for existing staff only every 2-3 years, as well as for any new people dealing with minors. The 3rd article suggests the conviction occurred during the current season, which would not show up in any background check assuming it was a first offence.
(3) The same article also suggests the player had sworn and taunted the coach previously. Clearly this coach is not the only poor role model--his own coach as well as his parents also bear much responsibility.

In the Toronto area, the GTHL (largest league) does not allow handshakes after games partly to avoid such incidents of poor sportsmanship. This occurs pre-game instead.

Unfortunately, there are far too many instances of coaches--including at the D1 level--whose attitudes and behaviours make them extremely poor role models for youth and young adults. You sure hope for much better.

As a teacher if I tripped a kid every time they taunted or swore every kid would have a broken wrist. Yeah, ****ty parenting leads the kid to be a *****(feminine hygiene product)...but as an adult, you need to rise above it and not respond to the taunting of a 13 year old. If he had talked o the other coach about it...maybe that coach would have punished his player for being a moron.
