Re: All sunyac

Pretty much the way I had it. Although I had Whitelaw on the 2nd team (only because he missed time). It's tough to leave one of the best players in the country off a conference all=star eam!! Good for Docking, he's the heart of Plattsburgh's team. A little surprised at McConney on 3rd team??

From the SUNYAC season as a whole, I figured McConney on first and Josepher on third as well

Congrats to Kevin Emmerling, the only freshman selected. And who would have thought at the start of the season Nick Jensen would be a 2nd team selection on DEFENSE!?

The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) is pleased to announce the Herb Hammond Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year awards for the 2012-13 men’s ice hockey season. The awards are voted on by the conference coaches.

Oswego State's Paul Rodrigues has been named the Herb Hammond Player of the Year, Plattsburgh State's Kevin Emmerling was picked as the Rookie of the Year and Geneseo's Chris Schultz was chosen as the Coach of the Year.

The Player of the Year award is named after Herb Hammond who coached at SUNY Oswego (1969-1980) and Plattsburgh (1981-83). At Oswego he compiled a 176-122-5 mark and at Plattsburgh a 52-17-4 record. He was named the 1982 Division III Coach of the Year. He also coached at Division I Brown University from 1983-88. He left coaching to become a National Hockey League scorer for 11 seasons before his death in 2009.

Rodrigues is a senior from Etobicoke, Ontario. Prior to playing at Oswego, Paul played for the Toronto Jr. Canadiens. He is currently studying criminal justice at SUNY Oswego. Rodrigues improved his statistics from last year to lead the SUNYAC conference in points this season. He played 26 games and was ranked first with 14 goals and 28 assists, averaging 1.62 points per game. He was named SUNYAC Player of the Week twice this season (10/29/12 & 12/10/12).

Rodrigues is ranked second in scoring (42) in Division III and third in assists (28). His success this season helped the Oswego Lakers rank thired nationally. Throughout Rodrigues's time at Oswego, he has played 82 games, accumulated 34 goals, 53 assists, and 87 points.

Emmerling is from Northbridge, Massachusetts and previously attended St. John's Prep. Emmerling is currently studying criminal justice at Plattsburgh State. During his first year at Plattsburgh, he has been one of the top performing freshman. Emmerling played 22 games this season. He is ranked 15th in the conference with 14 goals, and 10 assists. He averaged 1.09 points per game.

Emmerling was named SUNYAC Rookie of the Week three times during the 2012-2013 season (11/12/12, 1/14/13, & 2/18/13). Emmerling's most notable Rookie of the Week award stemmed from his performance against the Oswego Lakers, who are ranked first in the SUNYAC conference. In Plattsburgh's 4-3 win over Oswego, Emmerling had one assist, and two goals, one being the game winner. Kevin Emmerling's contributed to Plattsburgh being ranked ninth nationally.

Geneseo head coach Schultz has been named SUNYAC Coach of the Year for the second time in his career. Schultz first received the award in March of 2011. He has been head coach at Geneseo for seven seasons, previously serving as assistant coach for three seasons. Schultz led Geneseo to an 11-4-1 conference record, placing them third in the SUNYAC men's ice hockey standings.

Oswego State will host Plattsburgh State in the SUNYAC Championship game Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

Re: All sunyac

No issues with any of the deserving winners, but I would have picked Emery over Schultz. Not because of anything Schultz did or didn't do, but Emery nearly won the league with how many freshmen?

Re: All sunyac

Agree. Cant really argue POTY or ROTY, but not sold on Schultz. A team that goes 1-4 vs the Top 2, being outscore 9-27 yet Emery takes a team with 11 regular playing freshman (70%+) games played and finishes 1 point out of first place over a senior heavy and national contender Oswego State. They keep bringing up overall points, but isn't these awards for conference only? Maybe they just didn't want to repeat with Emery again?

The Schultz pick was surprising...and interesting because the coaches vote on themselves. Did more with less? Best haircut? His turn? Who knows.
Nice honor regardless of the reason.

Re: All sunyac

Emery does that all of the time. It really is getting kind of boring watching his success year after year. Maybe that is what the SUNYAC was thinking also?
