AJ Aitken Returns to SNC Coaching Staff

It's official, AJ Aitken has returned to the SNC men's coaching staff in the position he held previously: associate head coach.
He spent the last three seasons as Marian Univ head coach.

So why does someone leave a head coaching job to go back to being an assistant coach at their previous place of employment? Poaching? Dissatisfaction and disappointment in the Athletics Department where be was a head coach? Didn't like the town? Family or other personal reasons? Anyone have any insights? Even the previous coach left after being successful to go to a program that is lower in the standings so is it a money issue? Looks like they've had 6 different head coaches since 1995-96 and now they're looking for #7. Seems like a lot of turnover even for D3. The program is .566 for their history so something works there in spite of the turnover.

Re: AJ Aitken Returns to SNC Coaching Staff

I have read and heard that Marian underfunds the program. It has shown in the past 4 years or so. Jasen Wise left the program for the same reason. He went to a bottom of the barrel program that had just built a new arena. Now, the results haven't revealed themselves for CUW, but they're markedly improved.

Re: AJ Aitken Returns to SNC Coaching Staff

I have also heard that they defunded the assistant coach position at Marian. Hard for a coach to win as a solo act.

Re: AJ Aitken Returns to SNC Coaching Staff

Yeah, I don't think Marian is going to like where they end up in the standings over the next couple years. If Wise can ever get CUW to turn the corner, Marian might be down there in Northland/Finlandia territory for a little while.

Re: AJ Aitken Returns to SNC Coaching Staff

Just pure off season pot mixin' and speculation, but maybe AJ came back as the heir apparent if perhaps Coghlin has an exit plan for the next five years or so. Cogs has been on the job at SNC for over 20 years now. On the other hand, he's still relatively young. But, who knows, maybe some high profile D1 job in the same state as SNC could be opening up soon?

Maybe someone currently closer to the program can share their thoughts...

There's going to be a few big D1 jobs open next year, including the one in his home state. I expect half the B1G to be open after next season.

How much is half of Big 10? Is that 3?

Re: AJ Aitken Returns to SNC Coaching Staff

If the B1G can't figure it out, I can't expect the Prof to do it, either.

Re: AJ Aitken Returns to SNC Coaching Staff

According to the Big Ten website, there are 14 schools who are members, but looking at their Hockey page, there are only 6 teams, therefore half of the B1G is three....And THAT, in a nutshell, is the problem of "higher" education. :D:confused:

Re: AJ Aitken Returns to SNC Coaching Staff

The Big Ten has 14, the Big 12 has 11, and the Atlantic 10 also had 14 at one point. Apparently counting is no longer a prerequisite for college admission.

Well at least the Northeast-10 has - oh, wait, nevermind ;)

Re: AJ Aitken Returns to SNC Coaching Staff

And the University of Denver calls itself DU (a midwest idiosyncrasy also followed by the Universities of Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, and Oklahoma) and plays lacrosse in the Big "East." Not to mention the fact that Airforce plays hockey in "Atlantic Hockey." Illiteracy/innumeracy among academic organizations is a bad example to all.
