98th Grey Cup

SteveP

Alien With an Attitude
It will be the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Montreal Alouettes in the 98th Grey Cup game, a rematch of last year's CFL final.

The Als clobbered the Toronto Argos 48-17, while the Riders beat the Calgary Stampeders 20-16 in 1 degree weather in Calgary.

Riders' wide receiver Chris Getzlaf had 8 catches for 109 yards and a TD. Getzlaf is the older brother of Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf.

The Grey Cup game is next Sunday in Edmonton. The forecast calls for snow showers and temps in the 20's. Perfect weather for the CFL championship game! :D

Re: 98th Grey Cup

Congrats on beating me to this one Steve. I normally start this thread each year. Should be a good game. Montreal was clearly the best team in the East and Saskatchewan was arguably the best in the west. This is a rematch of last years Grey Cup that Montreal won on the last play of the game. Montreal missed a potential game winning field goal, but got a second chance when Saskatchewan was flagged for too many men. Damon Duval would not miss the second chance and Montreal walked off with the win. Montreal is just a very good team in all aspects of the game. Saskatchewan is a very good defensive team, but takes awhile to get going offensively. If Montreal gets off to a quick start they could put it away early. If Saskatchewan hangs in there long enough, they could pull this one out.

My prediction:

Montreal 27 - Saskatchewan 20

Re: 98th Grey Cup

This is only cool if it has the 3-way punt deal going on at some point in the game :p

I think the Riders will avenge last season, providing they remember how to count! :D

Re: 98th Grey Cup

Will the NFL network pick up the game like they have in the past? Or will it on the CBC, which we happen to be lucky enough to get here in Alexandria (not sure why, but it is OTA through an UHF provider)?

It's not on the NFL Network schedule (nothing but NFL highlights in the evening), and TSN has it in Canada.

Sorry, guess we won't be able to see it.

Re: 98th Grey Cup

We got to see the TSN feed of the Western Final on Altitude Sports Network here in Denver, which is on the dish.

Here are the US TV outlets for the 2010 Grey Cup:

If you have DirecTV, you can get Altitude 2 on Channel 682.

The game is being shown in some odd locations -- Pascagoula, MS for example!

As for Altitude 2 -- you can get it on DirecTV if you have the sports package.

Re: 98th Grey Cup

It's a little dated, but here's some great historical clips from past Grey Cup games.

The last clip there is probably the best. The Tony Gabriel catch against the Riders in the last seconds to give Ottawa their last Grey Cup is among the most famous moments in Grey Cup history. If that's not cool enough, the late, great Don Chevrier is the announcer. Don had one of the greatest announcing voices ever. An interesting note, every point scored in that game was scored by Canadian born players. Pretty sure that's the last time that occurred in a Grey Cup game.

Re: 98th Grey Cup

Speaking of Ottawa. I want that franchise back. I don't know when Saskatchewan is being so dooshy when it comes to the Riders nickname.

Don Chevrier and Ernie Afaganis -- two greats of Canadian sports broadcasting, and Russ Jackson, the last of the great Canadian quarterbacks. My one beef with the CFL is that the teams don't develop homegrown QBs.

Ya the Canadian QB is pretty much dead and buried. It will have to be someone like a Jesse Palmer that goes south and isn't good enough to play in the NFL. I don't see a Canadian QB that goes to a Canadian university ever having a real chance at a CFL job again. There's been a few in recent years, but they never really made it past the 3rd string level (ie. Giulio Caravatta).

Speaking of Ottawa. I want that franchise back. I don't know when Saskatchewan is being so dooshy when it comes to the Riders nickname.

I may be wrong here but I believe Ottawa will have a team for the 2012 season. My understanding was that there's an ownership group in place and they are just waiting for the rebuilding of the south stands (which had been condemned and torn down) at old Landsdowne Park. As for the Rough Riders name, well that's not being held up by the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Horn Chen, the last owner of the Ottawa Rough Riders before they folded has the legal rights to the name and wants more than anyone is willing to pay to get the name back.

Re: 98th Grey Cup

Looks like the weather should be fine for today's classic. :D

Considerable cloudiness. High 16F. Winds NW at 5 to 10 mph.

Here's a look at how the weather has impacted past Grey Cup games.

Dec. 1 and 2, 1962,in Toronto

Winnipeg 28, Hamilton 27

The most infamous Grey Cup game took two days to complete thanks to a soupy fog that enveloped Exhibition Stadium just before half time. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter when commissioner Syd Halter finally suspended the game. There was no scoring when the teams played the final 9:29 the next day, preserving the Bomber victory. Eskimos quarterback Jackie Parker, who travelled from his home in Tennessee to watch the game in person, was said to have quipped, “That was the best ball game I never saw.”

Ya weather and the Grey Cup are strange bedfellows. There was the Mud Bowl when an injured player almost drowned while laying face down in a mud puddle. There's been several Ice Bowls, probably most infamously in 1976 in Montreal (team coached by Marv Levy) when the Alouettes got an edge on the Eskimos by putting staples in their shoes for better traction on the frozen turf at the Big Owe. There was also the Grey Cup in Hamilton played in a near blizzard.

Should be a fun one today, especially if the predicted snow falls.

Re: 98th Grey Cup

Half time and Saskatchewan has an 11-8 lead. The defenses have played well and the offenses have struggled to really get anything going.

Last year at half time Saskatchewan had a 17-3 lead and Montreal came back to win. Hopefully things will open up a little in the second half.

Re: 98th Grey Cup

Well the second half was better than the first half, but still not much offense. Montreal's defense was one series better than the Roughriders defense and Montreal wins back to back Grey Cup's. The Argonauts in 96 and 97 were the last team to accomplish that feat. The better team won today plain and simple. It was a good game today, but not what I would call a classic. Congrats to the Alouettes and the city of Montreal.

Final score:

Montreal 21 - Saskatchewan 18

Thanks for the update, Cats. Chris Berman picked the Als to win again.

I'm disappointed, but congrats to a great team led by future Hall of Famer Anthony Calvillo.
