The d3hockey poll has been kinder to Utica for most of this year. But the d3hockey poll is also a lot more volatile than the uscho poll. If utica loses one game that they were supposed to win, you can expect them to fall very far in the d3hockey poll. They might fall 1 spot in the uscho. Look at Bowdoin, they lost one game and fell from 2nd to 6th. Very volatile.

Also note that last week St. Norbert got dropped 4 spots for losing one game against WEC (a ranked and very tough opponent) and the week before that Hobart was dropped 3 spots for losing a game against UC. Oswego also dropped 4 spots in the d3hockey poll after their early january loss to UC. Very very volatile. So when people say that the NCAA rankings will resemble the d3hockey poll i have to ask whether you mean this week's d3hockey poll or next week's because they are probably very very different.

I see your argument, but Utica took the season series from Oswego AND Hobart (both rated higher than UC at 2 and 5 respectively) ...I think the D3 poll has it right at #3 while the coach's poll is out of touch.

Utica is 5-1 vs top 10, Strength of schedule #1, KRACH #1 D3.com is about right, It's a no brainer FFS !! Noone else even close to this, I think the SOS and 5-1 vs top 10 says it all.

Yeah, but a couple of years ago Alabama got to be #1 and they couldn't win their division! Oh wait, maybe using the BCS to justify anything is not such a great analogy!:eek:

Sure Utica has been able to take down some big names like Oswego and Hobart (though Oswego was able to beat Hobart too) but they've also lost to teams that shouldn't have even been a challenge such as Elmira and Cortland. When a team goes from shutting out a great team like Oswego 6-0 to being shutout by a crappy team like Cortland 5-0 it leaves people wondering whether the team can show the consistency necessary to actually be a good team. Even that loss to Neumann looks pretty pathetic. Utica has been shut out twice this season against clearly inferior teams.

Oswego on the other hand has continually destroyed pretty much every team that they were supposed to beat. Their only losses have been against ranked opponents that will always be challenging. In order to get high up on the rankings you have to start by winning the easy games, and then you can be forgiven for losing some of the hard games.

The KRACH ratings don't account for which teams in your schedule you lost against, it only uses your winning pctg as a whole and the winning pctg of your opponents. If you have 4 losses, it doesn't matter if they're against the toughest teams on your schedule or the easiest teams on your schedule, you'll have the same KRACH rating.

How about 17-4 against the the toughest schedule in D3 ? And 6-0 against Oswego and 5-1 vs top 10 ?

Does KRACH consider SOS also....they must ?

Utica has done well against tough teams, yes. But they keep losing to easy teams. They lost to Elmira and got SHUT OUT by Neumann AND Cortland. If Utica is a top team, they should not lose games to these easy opponents. That's why their USCHO ranking is hurting.

WE all know that any poll which has Utica anywhere but 1st is both biased and a conspiracy.

Naaahhh - like my thread states in the beginning - I feel they are a legitimate #3 in D III....the season is almost over, we'll see how things shake out in a few weeks...the Pioneers have to close out with two games at Manhattanville - win both of those and they should be sitting pretty.

No, win a game on March 16th and you're sitting pretty...everyone else it's "Wait until next year!"

Really Utica fans? #3? I have heard people in all areas of Sport argue who should be number 1, but never have I heard such blustering over who should be 3rd. I guess when the bar has consistently never been met it automatically lowers. Make your case for #1, or shut the heck up.

I think Utica's place in both polls are wrong--and Jerry, I don't think they are both too low,

While my little voice says "just let it be," it is interesting to note that the following teams, ranked in the top 15 this week, have lost a total of 17 games: Hobart (3), Oswego (3), Amherst (5) and Neumann (6). Utica was the other team in 7 of those 17 losses. Utica has a 7-2 record against these 6 teams this year. And yes, I guess when you lose a 1-0 game its gets counted as a shut out. :rolleyes: (Is a loss against a ranked team really a loss against an easy opponent, toto?)

Hopefully UC learned not to take anybody for granted at anytime (a lesson better learned at Cortland than somewhere else-and I am not convinced that a different outcome of that game would have lead to a much different placement in the USCHO poll) and, hopefully UC's coach will not get a game misconduct again...........:eek:

I, for one, am having a great time and hope UC gets to play a lot more than 26 games this year. :)
