2023 Great Lakes Invitational: Tech, MSU, Ferris and Alaska-Fairbanks in Grand Rapids

Is it fair to conclude that Ferris (odd years) and Western (even years) are splitting the #3 "permanent slot" with the fourth being open for whomever?

Don't know how they could have done a better job. Love pulling in UA, Miami, and the Golden Domers. Having Western and Ferris rotate is great as well.

Is it perfect, no, 4 unique "leagues" every year would be perfect, but given cost, geography, and timing that is almost never going to happen. That said this is a great mix of mostly local teams, new faces, two committed host schools, a venue willing to work with the GLI, and the best part not a skunk weasel to be seen for at least 4 years. : D

Unfortunately it feels like the organizers have decided that the GLI can never be more than a local drive-in "regional" tournament. Can't get weekend dates, even in Grand Rapids, and now with 60+ D-I teams they apparently can't get someone (other than Alaska) to come from more than a couple hundred miles away even with 2 or 3 years advance notice. Really?

The organizers need to look at a tourney like the Ice Breaker which gets a much more diverse field and on shorter notice. I can't believe they contacted 30+ teams in Hockey East, ECAC and Atlantic and EVERYONE said their schedule was already full for the next four seasons. My guess is hardly anyone outside of driving distance was even invited. We don't need Ferris or NMU in the GLI when we already play them up to four times in conference play. Nothing against those programs, we don't need to schedule ANY other CCHA teams into the GLI.

It was better having a major eastern school, for sure.

Those are valid points, but we need to face the facts, hockey tournaments, save one or two, are not what they were. I don't like having other CCHA teams in, but clearly they are keeping it regional. With the way college hockey is it has been very difficult to get more East-West play. I don't think it is fair to slam the GLI for keeping it "western" teams.

It is disappointing for alumni who have to work over the holidays, they don't have weekend dates.

why don't we just rotate the host, as Tech is a small school

What does Tech's size have to do with anything? They have one of the most dedicated fanbases in college hockey who are willing to attended road games in significant numbers.

In regards to the GLI, Sparty is co-host and they are anything but small.

The GLI's "problems" are the same "problems" faced by all of college hockey. Finances are all that matters. History means almost nothing. Protect your RPI/PairWise ranking. Eastern schools and B1G rarely take road games because they don't have to. Everyone is out for themselves.
