Seasons just around the corner...

Look forward to discussions to continue with topics that will carry over from last years thread.

Of Note...

This past Saturday, Andover lost to Gentry Academy 4-3 breaking their 33 game winning streak.

Things don't get easier for Andover as they have a game tonight with Minnetonka which is televised on Bally Sports North at 7:00PM.

It's that time of year for Minnesota girls high hockey. Section playoffs. Tonight, 2 games on tap for the section 6AA semifinals at the Parade Ice Garden, with the first game set to start at 6PM between Blake and Armstrong Cooper and the second game, scheduled for 8PM between Edina and Benilde-St. Margarets. Lets of D1 recruits to go and see live.

Tomorrow and Friday offer execellent viewing options as well.

Love this weekend every year... Lots of good hockey with WCHA college playoffs beginning and the semi-final games in the Minnesota Girls State High School Hockey Tournament. This evening, in the first AA semi-final Andover holds on to a 2-1 win. Up now is the second AA semi-final, Minnetonka vs Gentry.

Andover scored two high-quality goals to beat a great goalie. A perfect tip on the first one and a DI-caliber play by a sophomore for the winner. High-quality hockey from what I saw of that game.

Princeton is getting a good goaltender in Corniea. Gophers should have interest in the forward you mention...Maya Engler. Andover has several good young players for that matter.

In the second game, Minnetonka leads Gentry 1-0 after 1 period.

And Gentry wins 2-0 in OT. I'm not sure what Minnetonka's approach down the stretch was; throw the puck away every time you get it. Reminded me of another team with an "M" when it gets in stressful situations.

Yeah 2-1 final...It was puzzling with Minnetonka...They really turtled in the second period which kept Gentry in the game and then came out better in the third but overall they struggled to complete passes for much of the game. Did like what I saw, for the most part, from #15 of Minnetonka who will join the Gophers next year.

Her biggest mistake was getting involved in a 3rd-period play behind her offensive net and taking too long to get back in position. Her D partner seemed to have no concept of when opposing players got behind her, so that led to a late PP for Gentry. Teams like Andover and Edina are so much more efficient in their systems; it's like Minnetonka wins on pure talent, and when it doesn't have as big of an advantage in that regard, it is vulnerable.

Impressions of the Gopher recruits coming in next year that were in the tournament...

1. Lauren O'Hara. Played a ton of Minutes for Centennial as they were only rolling two lines. Tall skater but has some decent quickness. I had not seen her this year until the tournament and it looks like she has been working on her skating. Good in the faceoff circle. Was willing to do dirty work on the penalty kill and block shots. Liked her overall game.

2. Isa Goettl. Tiny but fiesty. Really impressed with her ability to get the puck to her teammates and she has a very good wrist shot as well. A little worried about her having some Abby Murphy tendencies but I guess we will see how that plays out.

3. Ava Lindsey. Much like Minnetonka as a team, she wasn't that affective in the tournament. Not that big of a concern as you can plainly see the skating skill and shot that will translate to the college game.

4. Josie Hemp. She has skill that is similar to current freshman Nelli Laitinen. Good mobility and quickness. Can shot the puck pretty well but will have some adjustment to the college game as ARM discussed with some positioning issues. But that is teachable.

5. Elly Klepinger. Reminds me of Emily Zumwinkle. She can really shot the puck and is a decent skater. She will have some adjustments to make on decision making with the step up to the college game but she should become a top 4 defenseman for the Gophers before her career is over.

What's the story behind Gentry Academy?

I'm familiar with Vadnais Heights, and the White Bear HS/Mounds View HS Area generally. But I've never previously heard of Gentry, and suddenly they're the AA Champs?

They're an athletic program that has just enough of a high school attached to qualify for the MSHSL. They opened in 2017, and have a total of 93 students.

They are the only "school" against whom I would root for Edina.

So I take it there's a shortage of National Merit Scholars among the alums?

That is saying a lot! LOL
Indeed it is! Thank you both for the replies.

To Gentry's credit, at least they moved up to AA after a runnerup finish in A in 2021 (year ?) On the boys' side, Edina vs Hill Murray was always a tough call as to whom I wanted to lose more. And my least-favorite boys' team was St. Thomas Academy when it was a single A school by enrollment, 100% of which were boys.
