2018-19 Vermont Catamounts

TovarishchLisa

(Comrade Fox)
Coach Plumer put out a 2017-18 recap on his blog: https://jimplumer.wordpress.com/2018/03/15/so-far-yet-so-close/

So time to move on to 2018-19. Here's your roster as of right now, assuming no early departures. I heard a rumor that Anna Erickson is moving to D this year so I factored that in.

G: Scobee (Jr), Black (Sr), Natzke (Soph)
D: Kolowrat (Sr), Close (Soph), O'Neill (Sr), Flaherty (Sr), Poulin-Labelle (Fr), Murphy (Fr), Erickson (Soph)
F: Shanahan (Soph), Kilberg (Soph), O'Leary (Jr), Caldwell (Soph), Granato (Jr), Gorecki (Sr), Valkama (Sr), Picard (Jr), A. Holmes (Soph), L. Holmes (Fr), Gray (Fr), McCool (Fr)

I know Gray/MPL/Murphy/L.Holmes have been confirmed by the school itself - https://twitter.com/UVMwhockey/status/942772972774928384. McCool wasn't in there for some reason, but she is graduating Lawrence this year, so I'm going to include her until proven otherwise.

I'm gonna take a stab at lines too...

Valkama - Picard - Gorecki
Shanahan - O'Leary - Kilberg
A. Holmes - Gray - Caldwell
L. Holmes - Granato - McCool

Kolowrat - O'Neill
Flaherty - Erickson
Close - Poulin-Labelle
Murphy

Scobee
Black
Natzke

Really talented senior class. Don't know much about the freshmen, though I hope to learn quite a bit about them!

Re: 2018-19 Vermont Catamounts

First news of the summer is Not Good. Scobee is transferring to Minnesota.

Black/Natzke are going to have to step up big next year.

That’s a big loss for sure but Black has proven that she is quite capable of taking on the starters role. She had a terrific season at Union a few years ago. If she can play like she did then, you may not miss Scobee all that much.

Black was pretty shaky at times last year, that's part of how Scobee got the starting gig

One of their goaltenders transferred? Oh my, they should shut the program down! How can they go on!

Re: 2018-19 Vermont Catamounts

Congrats to senior Kourtney Menches who was named a NSCA 2018 All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year.

Justin Smith, UVM Co-Director of Athletic Performance: "Kourtney is a Senior Exercise & Movement Science major for the women's ice hockey team at the University of Vermont. She is an excellent student and a tremendous leader on and off the ice. She is one of the strongest female athletes that I have trained during my time at UVM. She holds team records in the Front Squat (270) and Bench Press (190) and Chin Ups (19). She also ranks high in team conditioning tests. Kourtney is planning on pursuing a career in strength and conditioning after graduation."

those numbers are crazy good!!! it's great to see players being recognized for working hard to get better...and the chubby hot dog eater on the Pit Penguins gets fatter and fatter. can he do even 1 chin up? if he did it won't count because he would have to do 3 to equal 1 as he has 3 chins.

great work Kourtney! You reap what you sow.

She can probably front squat the Penguin!

New commit today. Theresa Schafzahl from Austria. 45 points in 15 games in the EWHL which was second in the league. 18 years old who already has 18 appearances for the Austrian senior NT and she has 11 points at that level.

Without having seen her play...this seems like a legitimately exciting commit!

Re: 2018-19 Vermont Catamounts

She comes from the Vienna Sabres which is a very good program. If she has above average speed, she will be able to contribute as a freshman.

With a team that scored an average of 1.92 goals per game in conference and 1.91 goals per game overall, worrying about the goalie is focusing on the wrong end of the ice. Somehow, this team has got to score more goals. Valkama is doing the best she can on a a pair of bum knees and Picard is one of the most over-rated players in Hockey East. She is neither a consistent goal scorer nor a play-maker. In 33 games she scored a goal or goals in only 6 games. Do we really need her to score 4 goals against Union? How about one when it counts. On the assist side, she never had more than 1 assist in a game (11 assists in 33 games).

Last thing to bring cheer to your day - O'Neill is transferring (the reason why Erickson is moving to D and why the younger D will have to learn quickly). I think the optimistic target is to finish 6th or 7th in HE so as to avoid BC in the first round of the HE playoffs.

Watching the team last year, a lot of games they *created* a lot of chances but couldn't finish and it wound up getting into players' heads IMO

Congrats to future Catamount Natalie Ferenc who has been named to the U.S. Women's National Team Goaltending Development Camp

Ripping this player??

In 6 career play-off games (3 against Boston College and 3 against PC), Picard has 4 goals and 4 assists. She is on pace to break Pelkey's career stats and become Vermont's all time leading scorer.

Statistically, she has one of the weakest supporting offenses in Hockey East. But she leads her team in goals, assists and plus / minus.

Re: 2018-19 Vermont Catamounts

Windjammer Classic field is officially official:

Minnesota vs St. Lawrence
Vermont vs Syracuse

Plumer should bring in TJ Sorrentine for a pre-game pep talk... haha
