More great developments in the NAIA for ice hockey! In addition to the NAIA Hockey Division beginning this season, the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) recently announced they will sponsor men's hockey as a varsity sport starting this season.

As a college hockey fan this is awesome news, any chance our great sport has to expand is great for all levels of hockey!

The NAIA hockey website is up. Still a few inconsistencies between the WHAC website and NAIA/ACHA's. The WHAC has Rochester College as taking part in the NAIA division this season, but the NAIA website doesn't list them. The ACHA website still has Rochester as an ACHA DI team with a full schedule. UM-Dearborn I can't figure out. They're listed on the WHAC website as one of the schools participating this year and the schedule on their athletic website shows them playing NAIA games, but the ACHA website still lists them as an ACHA DI member, and they're playing a full schedule in that division as well. Also the NAIA's league schedule doesn't include UM-Dearborn and explicitly states there are five schools taking part this year. Apparently Life University isn't taking part as was previously announced either. They also don't show up on the ACHA website at all. A quick web search didn't turn up much, so the club might not exist anymore.

Looks like there will definitely be these five schools this year, three of whom are in the WHAC:

- Aquinas (WHAC)
- Indiana Tech (WHAC)
- Lawrence Tech (WHAC)
- Lindenwood-Belleville
- Waldorf

It looks like the NAIA Division teams and the WHAC teams are separate but connected group, similar to NCAA Divisions and sport conferences, this initial year, UM-D and Rochester look to be in transition from ACHA to NAIA but still participating in the WHAC.

NAIA Division for 2017-18
- Aquinas (WHAC)
- Indiana Tech (WHAC)
- Lawrence Tech (WHAC)
- Lindenwood-Belleville (ind)
- Waldorf (ind)

WHAC Conference 2017-18
- Aquinas (NAIA Div)
- Indiana Tech (NAIA Div)
- Lawrence Tech (NAIA Div)
- UM-Dearborn (ACHA DI)
- Rochester (MI) (ACHA DI)

UM-Dearborn and Concordia Ann Arbor are joining both the NAIA Div for 2018-19 and are both WHAC schools. I would guess since Rochester is participating in WHAC hockey, that their move from ACHA DI up to NAIA Division is also not far behind.

Looking at the WHAC overall, I'd say it's been a solid pace so far. Also, it looks like every team in the league streams their games which is helpful. UM-Dearborn may be the most talented to this point but Indiana Tech and Aquinas aren't far behind. Should be a great thing for the Michigan/Great Lakes states to have an additional varsity hockey option.

Looks like the NAIA group is expanding for next season adding UM-Dearborn, Concordia (Ann Arbor), and Midland (Neb.). The WHAC this year is a two horse race with UM-Dearborn and Indiana Tech. Looking forward to the WHAC tournament at the end of the year!

#1 UM-Dearborn wins the Inaugural WHAC Championship 3-1 vs #3 Aquinas

Should be a fun off-season to watch the WHAC/NAIA teams keep building. A competitive first season in the WHAC should get even tighter- Aquinas continues to build from their dominate ACHA D3 days; Indiana Tech will be interesting with graduating a lot of seniors, Concordia Ann Arbor looks like a solid recruiting class so far from their announcements; and UM-Dearborn is in an excellent position to continue their talented program. Hopefully the bottom teams in the WHAC this season also continue improving and getting deeper.
