2013 Meco Cup

CrazyDave

That alumni band guy
I may be the only one that cares, but I thought I'd post the thread anyway.

In a pre-Cup exhibition game yesterday, the Canada U22 team defeated Germany, 8-1. A full recap is on the Hockey Canada website at http://www.hockeycanada.ca/index.php/ci_id/208575/la_id/1.htm. Marie-Philip Poulin had a hat trick.

Games today...

Canada U22 vs. Switzerland - 7 p.m. CET (GMT+1) / 1 p.m. EST / Noon CST
Germany vs. Sweden - 7:30 p.m. CET / 1:30 p.m. EST / 12:30 p.m. CST

Re: 2013 Meco Cup

The Finnish Ice Hockey Association does a pretty good job of tracking this tournament. You can find tournament stats at http://www.finhockey.fi/maajoukkueet/naisten_maajoukkue/kausi-2012-2013/mlp-cup-tammikuu-saksa/.
I guess I was wrong about that... no updates from today's game, so I'm looking at other sources.

Canada U22s 4, Switzerland 0 - Sarah Lefort scored two goals and Christina Kessler earned the shutout. Recap at http://www.hockeycanada.ca/index.php/ci_id/208666/la_id/1.htm.

In the first game in Pool A, Sweden defeated Germany 3-2.

Re: 2013 Meco Cup

Final: Finland 3, Switzerland 1 - Niina Mäkinen, Anne Tuomanen, and Satu Tuominen scored for the Finns; Stefanie Marty had the goal for Switzerland. Noora Räty picked up the win in goal, while Florence Schelling took the loss.

Finland and the Canada U22s will play the final Pool B game tomorrow in what amounts to a semifinal matchup. Switzerland will finish 3rd in Pool B and play in the 5th/6th place game.

Re: 2013 Meco Cup

In Pool A, it was Russia 4, Sweden 2. A goal by Tatiana Burina with 2 minutes left in the second period proved to be the gamewinner, and Svetlana Tkacheva added a late marker for insurance. For the Swedes, Pernilla Winberg scored, her second goal of the tournament.

Russia faces host Germany tomorrow to complete pool play. A win will put the Russians into the Gold Medal Game, but it's possible for them to get there due to goal differential even if they lose. Sweden is done with pool play and will not get higher than second in the pool.

Re: 2013 Meco Cup

Wow. I was hoping that Finland and Sweden would be catching up to the North Americans. If anything it looks like that gap is getting bigger again as the rest of the world catches up with the Nordics.

The gap may be shrinking; I don't think that the Swiss would have come within four goals of the Canadians five years ago.

Re: 2013 Meco Cup

I'm also looking at games like US/Finland back at Four Nations or what the US just did to the Czech team that beat Finland in the U-18s. I'd also like to know more than just the score of that Swiss/Canada game but the Hockey Canada box score doesn't have shot totals or anything but goals and penalties.

The Hungarians, who in Oct were in the B pool only lost 4-1 to Canada! Their team only has 4-95s! The rest are 96-97s!!!!

Re: 2013 Meco Cup

FINAL: Germany 2, Russia 1 - Sara Seiler's goal late in the second period broke a 1-1 tie and proved to be the gamewinner. Franziska Busch opened the scoring with a first-period power-play goal, but Russia's Ekaterina Smolentseva tied the game. Box score

The win moves Germany into the Bronze Medal Game, dropping Sweden into the 5th/6th Place Game. Despite the loss, Russia's +1 goal differential puts them into the Gold Medal Game against either Finland or the Canada U22s.

Re: 2013 Meco Cup

FINAL: Canada U22s 2, Finland 0 - A power-play goal by Sarah Lefort and an even-strength tally by Janelle Kohanchuk were enough to put the Canadians into the Gold Medal Game tomorrow. Geneviève Lacasse earned the shoutout. Canada was 1-for-8 on the power-play; Finland was 0-for-5. Box score

Finland will play in the Bronze Medal Game against Germany.

U22 Women aren't necessarily U22 Women...some 23+ years old...what gives?
It's actually the "U22/Development Team". It's never been strictly U22, same as when the U.S. has put such a team together.

Plus only Canada sends an underage team to this tourney. The other countries send their primary national teams.

Re: 2013 Meco Cup

In the 5th/6th Place Game, Sweden defeated Switzerland in overtime, 4-3. Sweden's Erika Grahm scored her second goal of the game to win it, an unassisted power-play tally.

Both the Bronze and Gold Medal Games are in progress at the first intermission. In the Bronze Medal Game, Finland leads Germany, 3-2, and in the Gold Medal Game, the Canada U22s lead Russia, 3-2.

Re: 2013 Meco Cup

Bronze Medal Game, end of the second period - Finland 4, Germany 2. Mira Jalosuo has a pair of power-play goals for the Finns (interestingly enough with the same German player in the penalty box both times).

Gold Medal Game, end of the second period - Canada U22s 5, Russia 2. Things have gotten a little chippy, as the two teams have combined for 15 minor penalties and a 10-minute misconduct in the second period alone. Mélodie Daoust has two goals and two assists and Jamie Lee Rattray has a goal and two assists for the Canadians.

EDIT: Make it 16 minor penalties in the second period of the Gold Medal Game, as another was called as the period ended.

Does the added penalty, to make it 16 in the second period, mean that it's made the transition from a "little chippy" to "chippy"? ;)

Re: 2013 Meco Cup

Both games now final...

Gold Medal Game
Canada U22s 8, Russia 3 - Goals by Brigette Lacquette and Carolyne Prévost in the third period put the game away. As previously mentioned, Mélodie Daoust had two goals and two assists, while Jamie Lee Rattray had a goal and 3 assists. Tatiana Burina had two goals and an assist for Russia. Box score

Bronze Medal Game
Finland 6, Germany 3 - Annina Rajahuhta scored twice in the third period to go with an assist from earlier in the game. As previously mentioned, Mira Jalosuo had two power-play goals, including the eventual gamewinner. Box score
