Hell, almost forgot things kick off this week. Bemidji State faces off with Minot State in the Beaver Bowl tomorrow at 8 pm EDT. As far as I can tell, they are the first in all of the NCAA to kick off this year.

Tech's votes come mostly due to returning the majority of what was the GLIAC's best defense last year. With Short gone, the starting QB still needs to be sorted out.

I'll say 8-3, with road losses to Wayne and GV for sure.

NWMSU was the current holder of The Man title, so that game unified the title.

Minnesota-Duluth now currently holds the title of "The Man" now. I'm pretty sure I had all of the dates from 1988 to 1990 filled out, but I can't currently find that research I had from them and this was the most up to date copy of the list I had. I used this website here.... http://michigan-football.com/ncaa/ncaa_ii.htm and I pretty much used that site from there on to determine "The Man". It does get harder to figure out when teams moved up back then, but usually poking thru their older media guides will give you the dates you need, and you also might fight the info to confirm what division a school was when it played somebody who my have been a holder of the title belt then. If anybody can fill in those missing dates or track it back from an earlier champion, it would be a big help as well. In theory here, all NC winners were the Man, even if it was just an interim title.

And one of these days I will get it back to the 1975 NMU Wildcats. Even if I have to listen again to some of the old GVSU alumni rattle on about how they cheated in that game against them that year. :cool:

Replacing Short does seem to be the big issue for Tech this year. Short was a dangerous bugger back there, and last year helped to prove that.

I'm certainly not an expert on the comings and goings at D2 football teams across the country, but based on the knowledge I do have of NSIC teams and after browsing through my first ever copy of the D2 football preview magazine that D2football.com puts out, here is what my gut is telling me.

UMD will beat Augustana, but lose on the road to St. Cloud.
St. Cloud will win the NSIC North, Auggie will win the rest of their games and take the NSIC South and those two teams will share the overall conference title.
GVSU will come out of Super Region 3 and lose to Delta State in the National Title.

Of course what I WANT to happen is for UMD to have another undefeated Nat'l Title season, but I would also be happy in the SCSU football finally won the school's first National Title in any sport. I am a paying UMD season ticket holder for the first time (Got free tickets to SCSU as a Husky Pup and to UMD as a student) and I'm pumped for the season to start!

Looking at our schedule, I know that I predicted 8-3, but I could just as easily see 7-4, or even worse if injuries pop up (hopefully not as badly as two years ago). On that note, excuse me while I go grab my 5 lb. bag of sand. :p

As for QBs, supposedly our redshirt freshman Tyler Scarlett has a similar skillset to Short, but junior Ray Wojtala is older and has more reps. I'd surmise that he is the QB to start the season, and potentially loses the job to Scarlett if he isn't up to snuff. We had a similar situation with Drew Schaft and Steve Short my sophomore year, and you can see how that worked out - Short was the QB by Game 3.

I agree with FTLT that St. Cloud beating UMD isn't that much of a stretch, and I also think that picking the #2 team to beat the #4 team in the championship isn't a particularly bold prediction.

True.....

But I just happen to think that this is the year that a LSC squad finally gets past NWMSU and the MIAA, and perhaps makes the championship. Southeast plays the Southwest and Northwest plays the Northeast this year in the playoffs, so that would also mean that the LSC squad would beat that Delta team.

You certainly have to a optimistic about his ability to contribute, but UMD really doesn't need anymore legal trouble. I think its interesting that he transferred down two notches and still had to sit out the year. I also heard a rumor that he blew out his knee on the first day of practice anyway.

Yeah, its pretty much automatic for a guy to transfer down and be able to technically play right away.

Of course, Transfers aren't always what they're cracked up to be. Some can pan out for ya, but a lot of them come in with the attitude that they was D1 and thus, already better than everybody else there and they don't need to work as hard to be on the field. The ones that do work out are the ones that realize that just because they rode the bench at some D1 school, it doesn't me diddly at D2. The field is still 100 yards long, and you still have a bunch of 18 to 23 year olds who are all pretty decent football players themselves.

Reports in Iowa say he's sitting out for academic reasons.
It's why he was suspended by Iowa until he got busted for drugs in Des Moines while under suspension.
