2011-2012 UW-Stout Regular Season Thread

Re: 2011-2012 UW-Stout Regular Season Thread

In watching Stout the first weekend of this season here are my thoughts and comments about how they looked:

Stout appeared faster and deeper than I can remember in recent years which will lead to a more exciting style of hockey this season.
Returning the leading scorer and All-American Branden Gay was a huge boost for Stout and the top line.
Being able to put Gay between Hartviksen and Carr will really bring up the point production of that line.
The 2nd line may not have put up as many points but had 2 very solid games with many quality chances for scoring (Grimstad, Vierling, Stafne)
The 3rd line scored in bunches and just looked to be in mid-season form already. This line will benefit from facing other teams 3rd lines, and I look for high point totals for these 3 players, and maybe a few PIM's as well. (Cecka, LaChance, O'Donnell)
The 4th line this weekend was a group of freshmen and they were a very high energy line. (Pullar, Bell, Dillon)
The scratches Millis, Kirley, Giles, J. Whited, and Knox all could be inserted in the lineup depending on what type of game Coach Watkins wants to play and based on the match ups.

Our defense gave up a few 2 on 1's but overall looked very good and moved the puck very well. Cohen did not play this weekend but is expected back soon and will take his place in the top 6 defense.
Stout had Breeden, Maly, R. Whited, Beaudette, Tredinnick, Poganski, and Bombardier play this weekend.
Although mostly younger players they seemed to communicate well and reduce the shots on goal.

In goal Lescovich is clearly our #1 this season, and didn't seem to be tested too often. Hopper came in and played part of the 3rd period in one game and looked in good form.
This 1-2 punch in goal could be a large benefit for Stout as the season rolls on.

In a back and forth game Stout comes out victorious vs a tough Concordia (MN) team with a 2-1 win. Kevin O'Donnell scored on the PP with under a minute left in the 3rd period. Goalies Lescovich and Andrew made this a very low scoring afair with their play tonight. Stout returns to The ice tommorrow night at 7:30pm vs St. John's at the Dunn County Ice Palace

After a tough loss to a very good Superior team Friday, Stout pulls a 2-1 overtime victory Saturday. Very solid defense and goaltending. Goals by O'Donnell and Hartviksen tonight. Looking forward to seeing the same effort and team defense for the rest of the season

After a tough weekend in Duluth, Stout returns home to face the Rowdy Crowd and UW-Stevens Point. Look for a very fierce battle between these rivals and expect it to get chippy.

Does Gay still have big plans for Lake Placid?

Although Stout hasn't had the season they had hoped so far, they have improved their play in the last two weekends splitting each weekend series. A win at Bethel and at UW-River Falls are good stepping stones headed towards the Peters Cup Playoffs. Even the losses at Hamline and at UW-River Falls showed improved skating and play by Stout. Next weekend will be an equally difficult test with the defending national champion St. Norbert coming to the Dunn Co. Friday and the two teams will meet at the Xcel Energy Center for Hockey Day Minnesota.

Re: 2011-2012 UW-Stout Regular Season Thread

Following a tough weekend of games against the Defending National Champions St. Norbert (4-1 Friday and 2-1 Saturday) Stout showed that they can hang with the top teams in the conference. If the effort is shown by every man in the locker room it has been proven that we can take SNC to the brink (lead both games, Saturday led until the middle of the 3rd Period). With the upcoming games against UW-Superior and St. Scholastica, Stout can get a valuable 4 points in conference and continue to gain confidence going towards the Peters Cup Playoffs.
