2010 Stoney Creek University Showcase (IAA Tourney)

The escarpment continues to rock as the Intermediates take to the ice above the Steel City starting Friday morning. Game scores and stats are updated pretty quickly by Glen Boles and the hard working army of folks from Stoney Creek Sabres organization.

This is THE signature U19 tournament in Ontario. 40 teams, including LC, HB, Mission, POE, Aeros, Missy, Sens, Bluewater etc. All 20 PWHL teams are participating.

Last week Stoney held the Midget (U17) showcase event that was won by Honeybaked, winning over Thunder Bay in the Final.

This is a big Tournament month, as coming up in the next few weeks are the first Can-Am event (Detroit) and the Nepean Showcase (Ottawa), both with good fields assembled.

Lots of buzz on this one on the Ontario Forum:

Aeros are the big early favorite as per most pundits. Missy (Union champ) and LC (NAHA runner up) are in the field, so it should be a good one.

And your are right about Mr Boles. He puts on a premier event, 4 pad rink going full tilt for 3 days, three weekends in a row. (U17,U21 and U14).

What a great venue for a tournament!! Gotta be one of the best tournaments in the country. There must have been 50 universities represented with scouts...or more!

Saw some real scrambly hockey though. Little disappointed in that regard. The Whitby/Chicago game was the best that I saw. Probably some good games today with Aeros, Missy, Little Caesars, etc in the mix.

Good job by the organizers!!

Quarterfinals:

Cambridge vs Whitby
Burlington vs Stoney

Little Caesars vs Dawson
Missy vs Toronto

There have been some surprises along the way. LC lost to Burlington, and scraped into the quarters by the skin of their teeth. Their reward is a difficult path to the final, Dawson, and if they get past that the winner of Missy vs the Aeros.

Burlington sofar the biggest surprise, undefeated with no goals against, winning their grouping, ahead of both LC and the Aeros. Their reward is the easier QF bracket. Whitby is the other non-trasditional powerhouse team that has done well.

Sofar PW teams dominant in general, taking 11 of the 16 round of 16 spots, and a record of 24-11-3 in the round robin. Some of the casualties along the way have been Mission, Belle Tire, Honeybaked and BC pursuit. Aeros have looked dominant sofar.

OnMAA, is there a website for this tourney?

When does the Nepean tourney go?

Looks like many of the same teams are here in Detroit this weekend. This Cup Series goes for the next 4 mos. with top teams from US and Canada participating various weekends. I like the level of play I saw last year and this year should be just as strong.
