I was in a bar in San Francisco about a decade ago, and I was chatting with some of the other people sitting at the bar with me. First guy was a 70-something British dude, who when asked what he did said "I take money from poor people in India". He also got mad and left when I told him to stop rubbing my thigh. Gave the bartender a bunch of money when he left and I convinced them that he intended to pay for a drink for me and it wasn't all a tip.

Since I've been on a Lester Bangs quote, I will note something from this article which is eerily similar:

"In the 1950's this so-called Elvis Presley emerges with rock music that makes everyone bounce and shake their hips," Mantovani adds. "This is when certain behaviors start being introduced -- Elvis Presley, for instance, died of an overdose."
Compare Bang's obituary of The King:
(and by the way, kids, if you're following along at home, this is how to write).

There was Elvis, dressed up in this ridiculous white suit which looked like some studded Arthurian castle, and he was too fat, and the buckle on his belt was as big as your head except that your head is not made of solid gold, and any lesser man would have been the spittin' image of a Neil Diamond damfool in such a getup, but on Elvis it fit. What didn't? No matter how lousy his records ever got, no matter how intently he pursued mediocrity, there was still some hint, some flash left over from the days when...well, I wasn't there, so I won't presume to comment. But I will say this: Elvis Presley was the man who brought overt blatant vulgar sexual frenzy to the popular arts in America (and thereby to the nation itself, since putting "popular arts" and "America" in the same sentence seems almost redundant). It has been said that he was the first white to sing like a black person, which is untrue in terms of hard facts but totally true in terms of cultural impact. But what's more crucial is that when Elvis started wiggling his hips and Ed Sullivan refused to show it, the entire country went into a paroxysm of sexual frustration leading to abiding discontent which culminated in the explosion of psychedelic-militant folklore which was the sixties.

I mean, don't tell me about Lenny Bruce, man - Lenny Bruce said dirty words in public and obtained a kind of consensual martyrdom. Plus which Lenny Bruce was hip, too goddam hip if you ask me, which was his undoing, whereas Elvis was not hip at all, Elvis was a goddam truck driver who worshipped his mother and would never say f-ck or sh-t around her, and Elvis alerted America to the fact that it had a groin with imperatives that had been stifled. Lenny Bruce demonstrated how far you could push a society as repressed as ours and how much you could get away with, but Elvis kicked "How Much Is That Doggie in the Window" out the window and replaced it with "Let's f-ck."

The rest of us are still reeling from the impact. Sexual chaos reigns currently, but out of chaos may flow true understanding and harmony, and either way Elvis almost singlehandedly opened the floodgates. That night in Detroit, a night I will never forget, he had but to ever so slightly move one shoulder muscle, not even a shrug, and the girls in the gallery hit by its ray screamed, fainted, howled in heat. Literally, every time this man moved any part of his body the slightest centimeter, tens or tens of thousands of people went berserk. Not Sinatra, not Jagger, not the Beatles, nobody you can come up with ever elicited such hysteria among so many. And this after a decade and a half of crappy records, of making a point of not trying.

If love truly is going out of fashion forever, which I do not believe, then along with our nurtured indifference to each other will be an even more contemptuous indifference to each others' objects of reverence.

I thought it was Iggy Stooge, you thought it was Joni Mitchell or whoever else seemed to speak for your own private, entirely circumscribed situation's many pains and few ecstasies.

We will continue to fragment in this manner, because solipsism holds all the cards at present; it is a king whose domain engulfs even Elvis's. But I can guarantee you one thing: we will never again agree on anything as we agreed on Elvis. So I won't bother saying good-bye to his corpse. I will say good-bye to you.

Sixteen year old who died in May while in Border Patrol custody? It was from the flu.

At around 1:36 a.m., Hernández Vásquez gets back up one last time and walks towards the toilet before again seeming to collapse, this time on his back. The teenager can be seen moving his arms and legs, but by 1:39 a.m., his body was motionless.

ProPublica said the footage, which Border Patrol handed over to the police, cuts off at around 1:47 a.m, with a four-hour gap before the footage starts again at around 5:48 a.m. Hernández Vásquez's motionless body is in the same position and place. At 6:05 a.m., the other migrant boy in the cell wakes up, notices Hernández Vásquez's body and goes to the cell door to get the attention of officers outside.

At around 6:08 a.m., a person ProPublica said is a Border Patrol physician assistant determines the teenager's body has no pulse.
According to Border Patrol information, an officer conducted three so-called "welfare checks" on Hernández Vásquez during the four-hour gap in footage. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which oversees Border Patrol officers, has not explained the missing footage.

In addition to documenting Hernández Vásquez's last hours, the footage shows that his cellmate, the other migrant boy, was the one who first found his body. In May, CBP said he "was found un-responsive this morning during a welfare check."
ICE now claims they were "swamped" and couldn't spare anyone to transport him to a hospital like they were supposed to.

Yeah, but Barron Trump was used as a prop in a joke by a Stanford Law Professor during the impeachment hearings. That's way worse. Democrats need to fix their house before Republicans will support any fixing of the problem you've posted.

The discussion about changes to the federal benefits for food stamps (SNAP) is starting to infuriate me.

For every one "abuser" of the program the GOP thinks they're preventing, this will hurt many more innocent people who legitimately needed the assistance.

Even bigger, there is this big push to change SNAP that will immediately effect 700,000 recipients.

How many Americans used SNAP in 2018? 40 Million. In a nation of 419 Million people.

These fu**ers are "concerned" about 1.75% of SNAP recipients. They're "concerned" about 0.167% of all Americans.

But the top 1% needs another tax cut.

Whichever Dem wins the White House in 2020 needs to immediately tax the * out of the 1%.

The WWC has no idea when they talk about public assistance "fraud" that it's the only thing that has kept the WWC afloat for the last 40 years. Social Security, disability, and military spending are all welfare for the WWC. If left to fend for themselves in a laissez faire economy they would all literally starve to death. They have no marketable value.

There's a great stat in a book called "The Submerged State," about government benefits being so ingrained that the WWC doesn't even realize they get them and thus rails against gubmint. In her sample, 56% of respondents claimed to never have received public assistance. 92% of them had in actuality, they just didn't know it.

Yes, that is what they are concerned about. Why? Cause they really need another tax cut. Soon.
