Originally posted by Wicked Slappaahs View PostJust catching up following the weekend games. I attended the UMass game on Friday and was impressed with RPI's creativity and passing - far more time possessing the puck then in years past. A couple of bad D turnovers led to odd man rushes /goals the other way....but that's gonna happen with our young d corps against a skilled team...I know we'll clean that up as our guys gain ice time. Overall we showed a lot of grit and hustle -- UMass was never able to put us away until the late ENG. I thought that Savory was fighting the puck a little and gave ups some rebounds, not terrible just not his usual self.
Bottom line for me is that I saw progress in our offensive skill, face off wins and in effort. Look forward to seeing them again this weekend.
On the positive side, Mahshie isn't a speedster. Why is that a positive? Because is he was fast I think he'd be playing for BU. He's got size and he can shoot. He and Dubinsky both had nice shots picking the top corner for their goals. For years we've tended to be a team that cannot hit the net. Perhaps this is starting to change. And... we also seem to be figuring things out at the dot. I do think that some of this improvement is due to better coaching. Liked what I saw from Ashbrook and Babichuk (mostly) too. Whether this is early season over exuberance or a sign of things to come we shall start to see in a couple of weeks.

As he hustled back to catch up, he misread his D partner's (forget who it was) signal to switch men to the trailer of a 2 on 1 and it resulted in both guys cheating to the puck carrier and a one timer goal which should not have been so open. Rookies are going to rookie I guess. Without that goal I thought the team had a real chance to get at least tie.

Re: RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020: Nordic Combined
I know it is crazy to say this, but this could be a critical weekend for the Engineers.
Seth Appert always had us starting the season against much tougher opponents, and while I think you can learn a lot from playing the best teams, you cannot learn how to win.
Winning is contagious and if we can start with a three game winning streak, it can build up the confidence we need to go on from there.
But as the good Doctor always reminds us, RPI plays to the ability of our opponent. If we lose one of these games this weekend, we will be questioning ourselves, and that will not bode well for the future of this season.
I expect two wins this weekend, but that means nothing. We still have to play the games.
Lets go red!!!!!!Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

This weekend is a must sweep to have a good start before we hit the hard part of the schedule. We especially must beat Canisius to avoid a pairwise bomb. Here's Red Army's preview http://redarmy.union.rpi.edu/?p=115 (change https to http)

In two games the @RPI_Hockey team has six different goal scorers. That depth is a big positive for @RPIAthletics early in the season. https://t.co/ixbMoKQfqI
