        Yeah, I'm glad I did. Because it seems like the comments on the paper show this was an insane paper and probably shouldn't have been released in the state it was in. Language was very unclear and the methods used were bad. From what little I understand, it would be like picking up a Dickens novel and a Twain novel and finding a couple words in sequence that match in both books, three separate times and concluding it was plagiarism. Turns out, that's really common. Duh. Subsequent evaluations by other scientists in the field basically are calling this double non-plus bad.

        But now, this misinformation is going to spread like wildfire across Twitter.

          I still wouldn't put it past the CCP to have manufactured this thing whilst tinkering around in the local bioweapons research lab, but it's a good rule of thumb not to cite questionably-sourced Tweets from unverified accounts as scientific revelations.

            It's not a questionably-sourced tweet, I wouldn't say. THe original post I had was from an epidemiologist at Harvard's school of public health (15 years and counting) and graduated from Harvard & Johns Hopkins. I figured he might know what he's talking about.

                              Our results suggest a mechanism for periodic modulation either of the burst emission itself, or through external amplification or absorption, and disfavour models invoking purely sporadic processes.

                                Supergiant star Betelgeuse has been getting dimmer at an unprecedented pace over the past few months, leading some astronomers to wonder if it might be in the process of the collapse that precedes a supernova explosion. But there are other possible explanations, and we should have a better idea of what's happening to the massive star by the end of the month.

                                Veteran Villanova University astronomer Edward Guinan has been watching Betelgeuse for decades and reported earlier this month that the star appears to be "the least luminous and coolest yet measured from our 25 years of photometry."

                                It's well known Betelgeuse has no more than about 100,000 years left to burn and could start its death throes just about anytime between now and then. When it does go supernova, it's expected to result in a dramatic light show that could be visible in daylight and appear brighter than the full moon for a few weeks. The last time humans were treated to such a sight was the 17th century.
