The criteria can be found in the historical posts prior to the given season.
Having said that, these can be difficult to find in this thread as the weekly updates are made and bury those posts.
So, I've created a new thread DIII Championship Belt History & Reference to isolate and aid in viewing this information.
The weekly updates will continue in this thread.

Fri. update - Two first time Belt holders as Wesleyan wins the Eastern and Bethel wins the Hardcore.
UWSP and Plattsburgh hold on to their respective belts.

Sat. update - The two first time Belt holders (Wesleyan and Bethel) reign was short lived as they both lose their first title defense.
Middlebury wins the Eastern and St.Olaf wins back the Hardcore in Saturday's rematch.
UWSP and Plattsburgh keep their respective belts.

Wesleyan topples Middlebury in the NESCAC QFs to take the Eastern.
Potsdam loses 7-0 to Geneseo in the SUNYAC SFs but more importantly retains the Smackdown over the summer.
