Re: Has your team ever been ranked? (and other D-III poll related lists)

Now, let's say you're a fan if a school that doesn't get that much love in the polls. A team that's consistently weak (Northland, Framingham State). Or, a team that was really good 5 years ago, but can't put it together anymore (Concordia MN, Lebanon Valley). Or a team that does really well, but are frowned upon for playing in a "weak" conference (Fitchburg State, Marian). Maybe you would like to think, "Was my team ever any good?" Maybe you'd ask yourself, "Have we've ever been ranked?" or "Have we ever gotten votes in the national poll?"

Well, because someone asked somewhere, and because I have plenty of time to kill. I took a dive through the poll archives and compiled some lists of all of the teams that have ever been ranked (or gotten votes) in D-III hockey.

These lists use the USCHO D-III poll, and go back to the start of the 1998-99 season (the last season where all of the polls were available). I don't know if this has been done before, but as I said earlier, I've got time to kill.

(All lists are current as of 2/8/2010)

The following is a list of teams (in alphabetical order) that have been ranked for at least one week in the USCHO D-III poll since the 1998-99 season (along with the last time they received vote(s) in the poll)

Outstanding post...above and beyond anything I would have thought someone would actually do when I asked about it in another thread.

I'm rather surprised, Morrisville has received votes but Buffalo State and Brockport have never received votes.

I especially enjoyed the "# of weeks that teams appeared" list you got. Certainly does show name recognition.

That's my bad. My brain still seems to think it's 2009.

This thread should most definitely be put in the hall of fame.

There's one glaring omission from this one way or another and it's a school that no longer has a program but did back when you began your tallying your research.

I'll be honest. Until you brought that up, I had forgotten that Scranton even had existed. I'm not really that good at the history of D-III hockey, and doing this research helped me learn about some of that, including how strong some teams were in the past.

I've been following D-III hockey for about the last seven years; but only recently have I been following the whole landscape of D-III hockey, and not just Fitchburg State and the ECAC. I don't have a good grasp on teams that existed ten years ago, and don't today.

The first three lists are meant to consist of the 72 D-III teams that currently are active, plus any team that happened to receive votes or be ranked during the timeframe of my research. RIT happened to be the only team that doesn't play D-III hockey anymore and received votes over this stretch, which is why they appear in these lists. As for schools such as Scranton and MCLA, I never came across them in my two dives through the poll archives (and sort of forgot that they ever existed). Therefore, I didn't include them in my lists.

If you guys want me to include folded programs in the lists, I'll do that. Just give me everyone I missed. Of course; If I include them, those programs would only appear on the "never received votes" list, since that's the only list they qualify for.

                Sorry for any inconvenience.

You would even IF they'd kept DIII hockey. Thay're the "Trailblazers" now. Yay for PC

I wasn't led astray at all!

Anyway, I have to update this in two hours. Like I said; if I forgot anyone, tell me who, and I'll include them in the lists.

(Random note: Responding to my response with a compilation of facepalms doesn't help much either.)

He was referring to the MCLA Mohawks, who have since changed their name to the Tralblazers. They discontinued DIII Hockey in 2003. According to this article:

MCLA, formerly North Adams State College, has had a varsity program since 1971 and was a member of the ECAC East. The team finished at or near the top of the ECAC East several times in the early 1980’s but has had just one winning season since 1986.

Knew they existed. Didn't know they were called the Mohawks.

Anyway, new poll is out. Lists have been updated accordingly.

Yeah, the MCLA Mohawks, formerly the North Adams State College Mohawks.

I don't believe the hockey team ever played as the Trailblazers, although they may have in their final year. Don't recall them ever getting ranked but they probably received votes when they ran to the ECAC East title game in 2002.

From what I compiled, they didn't receive any votes. I actually pointed this out in a previous post.

RIT happened to be the only team that doesn't play D-III hockey anymore and received votes over this stretch, which is why they appear in these lists...
Maybe they deserved some votes. But unless I missed something, they didn't get any (I double-checked).

Good to know. Great work compiling all this. Being one of the few around here (Is vetdome around anymore?) that supported MCLA hockey I'm sure you can understand why I was a little snippy about their exclusion.
