I suspect that 5 4 is besmirching Hockey Alberta by pointing out that none of the rostered players are from Alberta....just a conjecture.

          British Columbia, Saskatchewan also absent.....

          Looks like Team Canada EAST!

Well they must be embarassed not having a player(s) selected at the U18 or 22 National level. Obviously their is something woefully wrong with their development program. Alberta has the largest female hockey program West of Ontario and significantley larger population base than either Manitoba or Saskatchewan to draw from.

Methinks it might be time to scrape some barnacles off the good ship Hockey Alberta...

Part of this may simply be attributable to the ebbs and flows of high end talent in particular provinces. Frankly, I don't know that Hockey Alberta is any worse than other provinces in terms of provincial level development programs. While I don't claim to know much about what goes on in other provinces, there are zero development camps/programs offered provincially in Ontario outside of their clubs. Maybe this gap is why Canada has been losing ground to the US in recent years at the National level.

Ontario is supposedly the hockey hotbed of Canada with over 50% of all players. But even in Ontario, you can attend a try out camp to make the provincial U18 teams, but there are really no skills development components offered either in these venues nor any such opportunities among younger age groups. There is also no feedback given even to help players understand why they were not selected or what they need to do to improve to get to that next level. Actually, it seems whether or not you ultimately make one of these teams in Ontario can hinge significantly on how young you are when you first opt to try out, simply because you have become a known entity.

I think it's past time for Hockey Canada to incent all of its provincial bodies to focus more directly on development programs at various age levels, rather than relying solely on their club programs to do so with varying success rates.

Alberta (pop. 3.6 M) has placed like 6th, 7th, 5th, 6th etc @ the U18 level against other provincial teams over the past number of years.... even getting beat by New Brunswick (pop. 650,000) a few years back.

I think you are on point with your comment about development in Ontario coming from the club teams (PWHL) where the coaching and development is far more advanced than the AMMFHL where Hockey Alberta recruits it's provincial team players from.

The AMMFHL did it's best for years to block programs like the JWHL from participating under the umbrella of Hockey Calgary. Due to public outcry, last year was the first year the Edge School (JWHL) was allowed to form a team on a 1 year trial basis. The success of the inaugural Edge team has lead to an extension of that trial.

Hopefully under the experienced coaching staff's at both Warner Hockey School (JWHL) and The Edge School (JWHL), Alberta will eventually begin to churn out players that make the cut at the Provincial and National levels.

                We'll see....
