I'm wondering about the true spread rate of the virus. How fast is it really spreading vs us just finding out about the existing cases.

Is the spread rate worse, better, the same than what all the models are showing?

Yes, it would be great to have everyone tested, but the U.S. is screwing the pooch on that on right now.
Yes. Most of us were talking about this **** when you were whining about people being able to go out to the bars if they were healthy, and why we all thought that was a bad thing.

That has been the underlying theme of these threads for a few months, now. Good to see you caught up.
With states opening up again, this has come to the top of the headlines. At the start of all this, it was spreading quickly. That part was obvious.

It's not so obvious now. So, can you please dial the spewing back about, oh, 20%? Thanks.
Never really developed a taste for tequila. Kind of hard to understand how you make a drink out of something that sharp, inhospitable. Now, bourbon is easy to understand.

        It's not?

Other than the NY/NJ metro area, where cases are coming down, cases continue to rise throughout the rest of the country. fastest in those red states and other areas that are reopening, or never really enacted stay at home orders in the first place.

Nothing has changed since this first started. Only the way your president is talking about it, and how he and the opening governors are ignoring it. Now he's back to saying it's just magically gonna disappear, just as he was in January and February.

        How'd that work out?

I'll put it a different way.

Did we really "flatten the curve" and the first wave is done, and the second wave (spreading) about to begin?

Or is that first wave still going, we're just finding out about other cases now?

And he's your president, too, rufus.

We don't know how quickly it was spreading. It might have been there all along. We couldn't know, cause we weren't testing. Now we are. But not as much as we need to be to determine the speed of its spread. We are testing at roughly the same levels, and seeing roughly the same daily levels of cases. The number of cases discovered is limited by the number of tests done.

If we were testing at double the rate, but seeing only the same number of daily cases, then we can see that it's not increasing rapidly. But we aren't doing that. Too busy getting things up and running again. You know, the important stuff.

We were supposed to use the stay at home time
To not only prep for capacity in hospitals, but also testing. Test trace isolate.
We could have come out of quarantine doing that and lessening the pain.

                Instead it’s still going strong

And we still don't have a test, trace, isolate plan in place.

Our war president is leaving that up to the governors. Bored now. Got Obama's crimes to investigate.

I was going to say, people have literally written books about the incident. I thought that might be excessive for a message board.

My point was that we shouldn’t be too hasty in our criticism of law enforcement when they make a decision to not publicly confront people who are likely armed, but in the judgment of law enforcement, are not an immediate threat. We have a lot of examples where law enforcement made a different decision and it went badly wrong.
That community is already in the process of dissolution where each man begins to eye his neighbor as a possible enemy, where non-conformity with the accepted creed, political as well as religious, is a mark of disaffection; where denunciation, without specification or backing, takes the place of evidence; where orthodoxy chokes freedom of dissent; where faith in the eventual supremacy of reason has become so timid that we dare not enter our convictions in the open lists, to win or lose.

It is shocking. More than 60 days after President Trump declared a national emergency over the novel coronavirus, there is still no clear national plan for what comes next. “The lockdown is not meant to be a permanent state of affairs; it’s intended to be a giant pause button that buys you time to get ready for the next phase,” Jeremy Konyndyk, of the Center for Global Development think tank, says.

But the Trump administration wasted the pause. Over the past two months, the US should have built the testing, contact tracing, and quarantine infrastructure necessary to safely end lockdown and transition back to normalcy — as many of its peer countries did. Instead, Trump has substituted showmanship for action, playing the president on TV but refusing to do the actual job. He has both dominated the airwaves and abdicated his duties. As a result, America’s progress against the coronavirus has stalled, even as the lockdown has driven the economy into crisis.
This, then, is the state of things: The White House does not have a plan, it does not have a framework, it does not have a philosophy, and it does not have a goal. That is not because these things are impossible. At this point, there are dozens of plans floating around and dozens of governments offering models it could choose from. Germany’s response has been a success, and I’m sure officials would share the lessons they’ve learned. In South Korea, professional baseball is restarting, and in Taiwan, there have been about a dozen new Covid-19 cases in the month of May so far.

It is not that the president is doing the wrong thing — he is doing basically nothing. But he has combined a substantive passivity with a showman’s desire to dominate the narrative and a political street fighter’s obsession with settling scores, so he is making the job of governors and mayors harder, neither giving them what they need to beat the virus nor leaving them to make their own decisions free from his interference and criticism.
