  • 2020 DIII Award Season: Conference Awards, All-Americans, Laura Hurd and More

Rookie of the Year: Julianna Gong, William Smith College
Defensive Player of the Year: Jillian Moffatt, Lebanon Valley College

Crocker will join the other conference POTYs as Laura Hurd finalists and will likely be named an Eastern All-American at the banquet.

I was surprised to see Nazareth not have any players on the first-team All-UCHC. Glad to see Moffatt honored for her record-shattering career though.

O'Sullivan is a great POTY choice. She's a great defender and now stands a chance to be the second blue-liner to win the Laura Hurd Award in addition to likely winning her fourth First Team All-American award. I'm not sure how many players have been First Team All-American all four seasons of their career.

Re: 2020 DIII Award Season: Conference Awards, All-Americans, Laura Hurd and More

WIAC Awards announced today (from the WIAC website):

MADISON, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Erin Connolly was tabbed the Player of the Year to lead the individuals chosen to the 2020 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Ice Hockey Team by the league coaches. In addition, UW-River Falls’ Brooke Walters received Newcomer of the Year recognition and UW-Eau Claire’s Erik Strand Coach of the Year honors.

Connolly secured first team honors for the fourth consecutive season and is the second Blugold to receive Player of the Year designation, joining Courtney Wittig (2019). She is the first four-time All-WIAC first team selection in program history. Connolly leads the conference with a 0.91 goals-against-average, 20 victories, nine shutouts and .950 save percentage, while ranking fourth with 414 saves. Her 20 wins are a program single-season record.

Walters recorded eight goals and seven assists for 15 points. A Newcomer of the Year is defined as a student-athlete who used her first season of participation in women’s ice hockey this season.

Repeat selections on the first team from a season ago included: UW-Eau Claire’s Elizabeth Bauer; UW-River Falls’ Abigail Stow; UW-Stevens Point’s Alex Grubbs; and UW-Superior’s Kaleigh Martinson. Bauer and Martinson were also first team choices in 2018, while UW-River Falls’ Hailey Herdine was a first team pick in 2017.

Strand was selected the Coach of the Year for the second time in his career (2016) after leading the Blugolds to their first-ever WIAC regular-season championship. The 22 victories this season are a program record – surpassing the previous mark of 21 set a year ago. UW-Eau Claire also compiled a program-best 13-game unbeaten streak from Dec. 13, 2019 – Feb. 21, 2020.

An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school.

Re: 2020 DIII Award Season: Conference Awards, All-Americans, Laura Hurd and More

So far the finalists for the Laura Hurd will be:

CHC: Jade Meier, Forward - Endicott
NCHA: Kelly O’Sullivan, Defender - Adrian
NEHC: Amanda Conway, Forward - Norwich
NESCAC: Madie Leidt, Forward - Middlebury
NEWHL: Annie Katonka, Forward - Plattsburgh
WIAC: Erin Connolly, Goalie - UW-Eau Claire
UCHC: Emma Crocker, Forward - Elmira

Add in the MIAC winner who I think will be Garin or Simon from Hamline (unless GAC has a O'Sullivan/Kiraly type top defender I'm overlooking...I don't think it will go to a GAC goalie the way they shared the load).

I think Conway or O'Sullivan are the favorites. And with Conway's body of work and the way she's 14 points beyond the next highest scoring forward I don't see how they deny her. Then again the AHCA bucked convention by awarding Bre Simon when they hadn't given the honor to junior in a decade so maybe they'll defy tradition again and give it to O'Sullivan.

Re: 2020 DIII Award Season: Conference Awards, All-Americans, Laura Hurd and More

The AHCA announced they'll reveal the honors on March 26th. For COTY, they used being top four in the PWR in lieu of being a semifinalist in the NCAA tourney. This resulted in Bill Mandigo being named a finalist. For the Laura Hurd, every conference player of the year is nominated except the two players who shared the MIAC POTY honor (Bridget Wagner of Augsburg and Jordan Hansen of Hamline).

                      Coach of the Year Finalists:
Mike Carroll, Gustavus Adolphus, MIAC Coach of the Year
Kevin Houle, Plattsburgh, NEWHL Coach of the Year and Top Four in Pairwise
Bill Mandigo, Middlebury, Top Four in Pairwise
Andy McPhee, Endicott, CHC Coach of the Year and Top Four in Pairwise
Shawn Skelley, Adrian, NCHA Coach of the Year
Erik Strand, UW-Eau Claire, WIAC Coach of the Year and Top Four in Pairwise
David Turco, Manhattanville, UCHC Coach of ther Year
Holley Tyng, Colby, NESCAC Coach of the Year
Mike Venezia, Castleton State, NEHC Coach of the Year

Houle is never a wrong choice for this but if they go with someone else I think Tyng with the way she's turned around Colby would be a good choice. She would be only the second woman to win the DIII COTY honor from the AHCA, too. Mandigo is also a good choice. Middlebury had a great season and he hasn't won the award in 15 years.

                      Laura Hurd Award Finalists:

Jade Meier, Forward - Endicott - CHC POTY
Kelly O’Sullivan, Defender - Adrian - NCHA POTY
Amanda Conway, Forward - Norwich - NEHC POTY
Madie Leidt, Forward - Middlebury - NESCAC POTY
Annie Katonka, Forward - Plattsburgh - NEWHL POTY
Erin Connolly, Goalie - UW-Eau Claire - WIAC POTY
Emma Crocker, Forward - Elmira - UCHC POTY

Conway is the big favorite based on her outstanding season and career and she really does deserve it. The only reason I think O'Sullivan has a chance at the upset is that the AHCA voters have named her to the West All-American First Team all three seasons she's played in prior to this one. I'd be floored if it was someone outside of those two, to take nothing away from how great the other 5 players are.

So because the MIAC had co-winners they get no one on the finalist list? Has this ever been the case before? Or, does the conference that had the previous year winner not get a nominee the next season? This seems very crappy to me, what is the harm of putting these two women on the list to recognize their achievement? Instead they leave them off to what end? The MIAC doesn't matter?

I believe Plattsburgh has had a finalist nominated every year since at least 2013 and had back to back award winners in 2013 and 2014 (Gove and Aveson), so your theory about not nominating the conference of the previous winner doesn't pan out.

Seems to be the second year in a row the AHCA voters has seemingly taken issue with the MIAC POTY. Last year they nominated and awarded (deservedly) Bre Simon who was passed over for Torpy at St. Thomas. And now they choose not to even make either POTY a finalist.

I wonder if they're trying to make a statement to conferences that they need to nominate the best player that season, regardless of class year. At least on paper, no one stands out this season from the MIAC except Garin and 2019 award-winner Simon. It would have been even more eyebrow-raising if they left off the two MIAC POTYs and nominated one of those two.

I am by no means a Mike Carroll fan, he has little in the way of sportsmanship, he never stops whining to the officials - but - what he did with Gustavus is nothing short of amazing.

They lost a TON in the previous two years, they played a lot of freshmen, and he locked down almost every team in the MIAC. The award would do nothing to lessen his self-worth, but he deserves major credit and maybe this award.

Any idea on what time it gets announced tomorrow?
