In those same initial two months in power, Hitler then issued the Reichstag Fire Decree which suspended most civil liberties, including habeas corpus, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly and any restrictions on warrants, searches and seizures.

IIRC, in his first two months Trump was still trying to convince everyone that the most people ever attended his inauguration.

By the end of year two, Hitler had already started rounding up thousands of military and political leaders who opposed him and having them imprisoned or shot. His plan to exterminate millions of Jews was well underway at the concentration camps that had been constructed.

I think Trump was thinking up insulting nicknames for Nancy Pelosi, wasn't he?

By year five Hitler was already on his way to invading neighboring countries. I guess Manitoba and the rest of Canada will have to await their fate following November's election.
So, because Trump isn't doing things the way Hitler did, everything's fine.

Nothing to worry about. Stop being hysterical.
What kind of cheese are you planning to put on top?

I don't think I've ever argued that it can never happen here. I think it could happen anywhere. I just don't think it is happening here.

In part 2 of your article you touched on some of the points that I raised in my earlier post that I think greatly differentiates what was happening under Hitler and what is happening here today. Unlike Germany where freedom of the press was suppressed, here it is flourishing. No doubt Trump would like to squelch it, but with the internet it is an ever-expanding presence in this country.

We also aren't seeing the constitutional amendments and concentration of power in one individual like occurred in Germany. We also still have a very strong state system that is not afraid to go out and directly contradict what Trump purportedly stands for or wants. Things like adoption of sanctuary cities, new human rights laws, etc..., are evidence of this.

Finally, I've always thought that a common theme to outright fascist dictatorships was something that you referred to as the cult of the leader. I think that's absolutely correct, that we usually see someone who develops an almost cult-like following, usually through some combination of charisma and speaking ability.

I don't think Trump has any of that. The extent to which Trump has received support from the Senate has largely been due to political gain, not some cult-like intoxication with Trump's leadership or personality. I suspect Republican Senators and Representatives will be happy to see the day when Trump is gone, although they will certainly mourn the loss of office.
That community is already in the process of dissolution where each man begins to eye his neighbor as a possible enemy, where non-conformity with the accepted creed, political as well as religious, is a mark of disaffection; where denunciation, without specification or backing, takes the place of evidence; where orthodoxy chokes freedom of dissent; where faith in the eventual supremacy of reason has become so timid that we dare not enter our convictions in the open lists, to win or lose.

Not great to have your "And what is Aleppo?" moment be about Mexico going into Nevada.

Klobuchar and Steyer can't name Mexican president.

Go figure Buttigieg did his research. Did he throw in a "Hola, Señor Presidente Obrador!" and some other mediocre Spanish as well?
