Second ammendment slowly poisoning the very symbol of American freedom, "Too expensive to change course to correct the problem," is the response.

      NOT an Onion article.

How expensive can it be to press little balls made out of steel or copper or something, instead of little balls made of lead?
What kind of cheese are you planning to put on top?

Aren't steel-core rifle cartridges typically armor-piercing? Usually illegal to buy those. They'd need to produce a softer version.

Steel shot has been around for years. Shouldn't be a big deal or expense to switch. Some people think it is bad for your barrels on the long run though.

The steel and tungsten sinkers have been available and in-use for many years now. Don't need expensive processes to make those.

So, no real issue other than triggering the libs?

Probably. I can't imagine lead is that much cheaper at this point.

Maybe Remington and Winchester can market some ammo made with all that fairly priced US-made steel the Trump tariffs were supposed to bring back?

they're more expensive to produce than lead, but people use them in lead-free hunting areas in California.

I haven’t hunted much in recent times, but back in the day it used to cost about double. I don’t think hunting with non-lead is a big deal at all and there is no good reason for hunters to oppose it.

Now copper being substantially more expensive is not surprising, given the rising price of that in recent years.

Copper price is actually down from it's spike from 2009 to 2011 (when the economy sucked and scrappers took everything including live copper conduit). It's leveled out at about triple the price it was in the '90s.

I would think environmental screw tightening on lead coupled with replacement material prices not increasing as much has helped even the playing field.

there is a pretty big health argument for the copper ammo.

i've seen some tests with copper vs lead in deer modeled from ballistic gel, and like 20% of the lead bullet ends up as small fragments that get dispersed and some definitely ends up in meat that is consumed.
