Everything about this tirade against our generals is believable.

Even though much of this has been reported over the last couple of years it is still somewhat shocking to me to realize the kind of mental midget we have sitting in the White House.

Some of what was described in the article reminds me of the way Hitler reacted with his military leadership, especially after relations with the Soviet Union turned from uneasy non-aggression pacts to open warfare and Hitler knew that Germany could most likely not realize a military victory. Hitler was evil and crazy. Is trump as evil or as crazy? I bet he's as least as crazy.

I also wonder about the motivations to stay somewhat silent for most of the people in trump's circle, even after they leave the service to the government and country. Part of me is thinking they are just (hopefully) passing the buck, and assume that after seeing this moron in action for 4 years, the vast majority of Americans in nearly every state will not want to give him another term.

But part of me thinks their silence is for more dangerous reasons. What if they were afraid that if some critical mass of people like Kelly, Mattis, Tillerson or others who worked in the White House really began to convince some republican leaders that the president is an actual danger far beyond just being the most incompetent and corrupt person to every rise to be president they would be setting into motion forces that might get out of control? In that regard too, they may be hoping that our ONLY hope is to hope he doesn't win re-election.

Of course the saddest and most troubling part of all of this is that there is no way in Hell the vast, vast majority of trump supporters will read either the WaPo article, or the book it is based on. How many trump supporters are readers? How many can read beyond a middle school level? That question is serious too.

For all the talking and ribbing each other and joking all of us do here on this forum I have to confess, I am also actually scared. I was a child and then young adult through the Cold War but I don't recall a lot of fear or unease on my part worrying about Russian missiles raining down. When I got older and began to read my mother's copy of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, I recall debating her on the problems of both nuclear power and weapons, and of the threat of the Soviet Union or the "Red" Chinese, as the term was then. She was far more concerned and fearful than I was, even expressing concern that Reagan might be the president who actually starts a nuclear conflict. Maybe part of that was the parent always fears for the future of the child. Today, I am fearful.

          We can do better.

I'm sure Obama and Clinton occasionally scolded their generals too.

Scolded sure. I highly doubt they called their generals losers to their faces and insinuated the US military should be paid mercenaries.

Fox and Hate Radio could reach them in 5 seconds. They could kill Dump completely with 24 hours of truth telling. The most maddening thing about all this is those short sighted profiteers leveraged this moron into power by creating The Mob and they did it for profit, not ideology. The corporate gnomes who own FNC and Sinclair do not have any political opinions at all beyond the usual raft of warmed-over 1890s social Darwinism. They do all this for profit -- if there was an extra ruble in promulgating the exact opposite political views they would do that.

So the Great Totalitarian Dystopia taking America out is not being accomplished by a military coup or a religious spasm or a right- or left-wing ideological conspiracy but by some dweeby Harvard MBA exploiting a market inefficiency.

I'm not fearful because any previous president also scolded a general or two. Presidents should scold generals. In fact in the last 20 or so years it should probably have happened more often. Generals should also be willing to scold their presidents once in a while too, as long as the realize there is a reason the commander in chief is a civilian.

Anyone who isn't at least somewhat fearful for the future with the mental midget in the White House scares me too.

I too am afraid and I too think we could do better. I do not have faith that we can or will.

The GOP has studied long and hard the marketing science of bias and crowd manipulation. They have a well thought out plan they continue to execute. Unfortunately, along the way, they have lost the memory for why they wanted to win and it became about winning, power and $$ into their pockets and nothing for the little guy. They have amassed enough internal power that anyone who realizes this and tries to evince change is immediately attacked and drowned in negative media.

This is akin to watching someone who can't seem to get out of the cycle of domestic violence. They are isolated, have little if any exposure to things outside their circle. They are fed a constant media diet designed to keep them separated, scared of [pick the conspiracy], outraged and unthinking. One false threat, one outrage after the other without relenting leads to pent up fury and very little time for anything else.

Their gobbmint is abusing them sinfully- the red states have less economic opportunity, less education, less healthcare, poorer outcomes for just about every measure. Without the lovely blue states taxes supporting their federal programs they would have close to nothing. Yet, they believe every minute that it is not the people they elect that are to blame. Any effort to offer ideas to help is labeled socialism with the Pavlov response to scream SOCIALISM!! and blame the libs for their predicament

Research shows that only ~10% of people are able to consider evidence without bias after they have formed an opinion. Once the bias is developed then there is an irrational need to look at evidence in a way that supports the bias. The CDC did some fascinating research on this showing when antivaxers were presented with overwhelming evidence and acknowledged the validity of the evidence their gut still says there is a reason not to vaccinate. They will do all sorts of mental gymnastics to keep that valid. Presenting valid facts actually made the bias worse and more entrenched. THe way to overcome bias was to ask what the outcome would be if they followed their current course. What was their plan to keep their child safe? Then discussing how they could best do that including discussing in a reasonable way the best options and the pitfalls. The GOP is excellent at packaging information in a way that helps form the opinion and then supports it with constant reinforcement. Of course the current facts are reframed and dismissed. THe base doesn't even have to do mental gymnastics. The media outlets do it for them. Unless the whole leadership suddenly drops dead the machine is unlikely to fail.

For some reason I thought Ken Starr, Alan Dershowitz used to be good guys who had integrity. Apparently not. Of course I was younger when they were in the news and in grad school so addmittedly I was not paying too much attention.

Why the F would you ever think that? Maybe Dershowitz like 30 years ago when Reversal of Fortune came out but he sold his soul a looong time ago (after 9/11 IIRC). Ken Starr was always a scumbag. He's a smarter version of William Barr.
