Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2019-20 (Part II)

Interesting Transaction yesterday by Coquitlam as they acquired G Joe Howe (Cornell)..........ah, never mind...... Coquitlam’s star goalie, Clay Stevenson, turns 21 on March 3. And an obscure NCAA rule means he likely won’t be available to the Express for those playoffs. The rule, that applies only to men’s hockey and skiing, means any competitive game Stevenson plays after his 21st birthday would cost him a year of athletic eligibility at a Div. 1 school next fall.
Stevenson is committed to play in September for Dartmouth College, a Div. 1 Ivy League university in Hanover, N.H. that plays in hockey’s East Coast Athletic Conference. But if he plays for the Express after March 3, he’ll be left with only three years of eligibility to play for the school, short of the four years he would require to also earn a business degree there. https://www.tricitynews.com/sports/g...ess-1.24048355

Brandon Pirri: Turk would give it to Jagr. That's awesome! Jagr's untouchable. And he would give it to Jagr.

Players get around that rule by enrolling and taking courses at a junior college with the "intention" of earning a degree there but not playing hockey there. Their clock starts on their 5 years to play 4 years of hockey. They lose their redshirt year but still have four years of hockey left. Players do that all the time.

      It's a loophole.

Still, unless a move is coming they’ll now have 3 goalies, all with D1 commits (all in ECAC also).

I missed that point. I should have read the link. Probably the Ivy league doesn't allow that loophole. All the better for Watson in the playoffs although who can tell what will happen the rest of the season.

Since the GM said they have tried to negotiate a resolution with Dartmouth, my guess is that the problem is not Ivy League rules, but some internal issue or policy at Dartmouth governing transfer status.

It may still be an Ivy rule. The Ivy League doesn't allow red shirts, so that may be the rule that applies. The negotiation could have been to allow his scholarship to continue for a 4th year even though he won't be playing hockey. Of course, the Ivy League also doesn't give athletic scholarships (wink, wink), so one would think that he could have his scholarship continued.
