Unforgiven? Very overrated. That was a Career Service medal for Eastwood.

I like Unforgiven, but yeah it isn't as good as a lot of people think it is. Pretty much watch it for the BAMF lines Clint gives himself toward the end.

This is pure speculation, but I wonder if The Unforgiven is "all time great" for those that haven't watched a lot of classic westerns or are an Eastwood bobo.

I like it and I like Clint in it, but I agree that it's slightly overrated.

Thing is, I love Eastwood both as an actor (A Fist Full of Dollars, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, the Dead Pool, Christ even Firefox!) and also as a director (Play Misty for Me, High Plains Drifter, Eiger Sanction). Unforgiven just isn't a great movie. It's one of a hundred interchangeable melodrama westerns (Clint is many things but subtle aint one of them).

I think it really was the same as giving Hitchcock that achievement award when he was old and doddering. It was a gold watch.

High Plains Drifter is a really good one. I agree that Unforgiven is a bit overrated, although it is a solid movie.

And Kep: Yojimbo is an excellent movie.

Westerns (at least good ones) disappeared for a long time, it seemed like, until stuff like Tombstone, Unforgiven, and Appaloosa tried to revive the genre. I think there was such an overload of them back in the day, audiences just tired of it; it was too much.

I heard a really interesting comment on a media review site a few weeks ago. They were talking about the history of TV dramas and one person said "Cowboy dramas were a staple of TV in the 50s and early 60s and then they disappeared." The other said, "No, they never disappeared. They just became cop shows."

That's a fair take. The amount of Cop Dramas greatly increased in the last couple of decades.

Going on five decades for sure. Just to name a few from when I was a kid (and doesn't really even touch on the 80's): Mannix, Rockford Files, Streets of SF, Columbo, Cannon, Police Woman, Starsky & Hutch, Kojak, Baretta, Ironside, Hawaii 5-O, Mod Squad, Charlie's Angels, Barnaby Jones, McMillan & Wife...

I had never made the connection before and it (still) seems a brilliant insight to me. If it's a commonplace, well, I never have gotten out much.

I also never thought of it that way.
