A big Florida State booster has a chain of restaurants and makes an offer of equal income from making commercials for his restaurants. A Gainsville Real Estate broker jumps in with an additional offer, and so it goes. Nike sweetens the pot. If you think the corruption by the shoe companies is an issue, wait until this explodes. Maybe the NCAA will limit endorsement solicitation of recruits, but chances are that such rules will either be ineffective or just found to be illegal interference with commerce. The idea may be well intentioned, but the fallout may be far from desirable.
Circle the date on the calendar, Prof: I agree with you completely. It's going to be a white-hot mess with too many moving parts to possibly monitor.

An elite hoops player is a 'one and done' so the ruling really wouldn't affect college basketball. And if Lebron gets his way, none of these guys will go to college before the NBA. College football is a different story, big money, multiple years.

True. But I think the initial program will be very restrictive.

I agree re: hoops right now... But the NFL can easily institute something analogous to the NBA's D-League.

And every Alabama-type recruit will sign-up yesterday.

The NFL has absolutely no interest in doing this. Absolutely none. They can get it all for free with the NCAA. No incentive whatsoever for the NFL to set this up.

True. But your slot in the draft could be affected, and in the long run (at least for your first contract) that can mean more money lost then possibly gained short term from the college.

True and they did try it, remember NFL Europe...

The NFL Europe wasn't a response to a sea-change in the business model. That was simply an attempt to expand the sport (er,the revenue).

Times could well change in a drastic manner, if the the NCAA becomes a free-for-all. I promise you that the NFL will look for another cut if there's no realistic way to control the college game...

And funding a D-league would amount to pocket change for that billion-dollar business. The NFL won't blink an eye via that one.

If California gets this thing in place, it's going to blow up the NCAA one way or the other, IMO. Drafts will matter only as far as the D-leagues go. Rookie contracts will likely be more lucrative. Who knows what other ramifications will ensue.

Might be as fun to watch as a good train-wreck.

If the season ended today, we'd be looking at:

Plymouth @ Endicott vs (1) Norwich

Augsburg @ Lake Forest vs (4) UW-Eau Claire

Adrian @ Hobart vs (3) SUNY Geneseo

Williams @ Wilkes vs (2) Utica

                          That is so true.

Also, as you alluded to elsewhere, how it affects basketball and football is going to be drastically different.

This is what I think the bracket would look like as of right now:

                              Round 1:
                              G1: Plymouth @ Endicott
                              G2: Williams @ Wilkes
                              G3: Adrian @ Hobart
                              G4: Lake Forest @ Augsburg

                              Quarterfinals:
                              G5: G1 winner @ (1) Norwich
                              G6: G2 winner @ (2) Utica
                              G7: G3 winner @ (3) SUNY Geneseo
                              G8: G4 winner @ (4) UW-Eau Claire

                              Frozen Four:
                              G9: G1 winner vs G4 winner
                              G10: G2 winner vs G3 winner
